It gets worse as time goes on, but that's a little expected given the limits of the kind of stories they wanted to tell. It was a bit of a victim of its own success. They managed to get the show back on track for the final season for the most part but you could tell about midway through the show the writers were having a serious crisis over whether or not the show should stay case-focused and how they could structure things.
Season 1 especially is super grounded though. Seriously, at least watch the first episode if you've never seen it before. It's not The Best Show Ever but it's not bad.
