Okay, this is the thing. This is the thing that gets my inner tinfoil hat going. This was my first thought when I saw the backlash from this video. I thought, "Why the fuck are these people getting so worked up about the AVGN? Surely there are hundreds of videos like this hat are way more aggressive and vulgar."
One of the amazing things was how everyone characterized him as an angry whiner but if you look at the video, he's completely calm. He's articulate and relatively polite, considering the kind of shit that people have been saying about the movie. Yet here are these peole, most of them clickbait morons, but some of them actual journalists and public figures talking about James the way bullies talk in middle school educational videos. "lol look at his stupid gumball machine, haha he swallows weird". What the fuck is going on?
I think what makes James's video different is right there in the title: "no review". The video isn't about him getting angry about the movie or just taking about how bad it is, it's a very clear advisement for people to just not see the movie. "Just don't go see it!"
And I get the feeling like that's what made the difference. Because people on the internet getting upset about new Ghostbusters is just free publicity, but someone flat-out saying, "Don't see the movie" could actually reduce the amount of money that the movie makes. Is it coincidental? Probably, but it's just something I noticed.
