No, I guess everything was shit when it started so people watched it. Then some of the actors like Aykroyd, Belushi and Chase did some neat stuff outside of SNL so it got a status of legend.

It is sketch comedy. It will always be hit and miss.
There were some funny skits all throughout its history. During the Eddie Murphy/Dan Ackroid years they had some funny ones. But every year has *some* funny ones.
If you watch every episode most of the skits will suck.

There's a lot of slapstick shit being made in the US, sure. But there's also a lot of good actual comedy. Whereas all Japanese comedy is overacting unfunny shit.

Japanese comedy really went down hill since their property bubble burst in the early 90s.
A lot depends on who the host is because they try and include the host in every skit.
So if the host has no comedic talent they tend to drag down the entire show.
