It is based on an ancient legend and they stayed true to it to a reasonable degree, expressing the thoughts and emotions of the characters even if the action scenes were a little off the chain. Note how often you can see their breath vapor in the cold air even though they are inside and they frequently reuse extras, even though it had a low budget the characters, acting and writing were exceptional enough that you don't care.
Game of thrones on the other hand is loaded with tropes and cliches. If it were made in the US you can bet Lady Sun would be turned into a Mary Sue who is miraculously just as good as Guan Yu.

This was just made up for the novel.
