That's why my fav HitB is the Whats Your Number and that schlocky Ninja movie review. They brought in Gillian, someone who enjoys shotty rom-coms, to help get them to understand why.

And it's funny too, cause Mike looked like an idiot. He says it's dumb to watch terrible rom-coms yet he enjoys watching horrid b-movies.

Imagine being Mike. Completely soulless, drenched with sorrow and smite. Always wondering when he will be rid of this terrible damp, the damp which has weighed down his heart like a waterlogged mattress.

Imagine being so jaded, so digusted with yourself, that drinking 5 beers before filming any RLM series is the only thing which will make you feel half the man you think you are.

'Hahaha, yes that is funny' Mike says, under the intoxication of alcohol. Acting as if it is his natural demeanour.

>>fuck synths! The movie would be better if they had used a traditional score!
He flat out says he knows there's a lot of people that are into that type of music and he's just not one of them. If you don't like that style of music, of course you'd want to hear something that seems more fitting for an action movie.

Toppest of pleb. So basically he wants every movie to have the same generic Hans Zimmer style to it.
>>
>>70750463
>I think it's too "unique"
He didn't say he thought it was "too unique." He just commented that it simply is unique. When you have to completely manipulate someone's point in order to complain, you're grasping at straws.
>>
>>70750463
That's not what was said, though

jesus christ, I bet you think John Oliver actually says CURRENT YEAR
>>
>>70750463
No, he wants the score to reflect what genre of movie it's trying to be. Do you think he would also feel a standard comedy should have a Hans Zimmer style score?
>>
>>70750463
He said ''unique'' in a jokey kind of way to describe his music, you dope, not that it's bad because it's different. I mean, he praised the Reznor/Ross score for Gone Girl which is anything but cliche.

Why is it that all these ''le pleb xD'' posters are fucking mouth breathing retards who can't calmly process the points made in a fucking RLM video?
>>
>>70750433
>If you're watching what is supposed to be an action movie, these are perfectly valid complaints.
I've never really considered Escape from New York to be an action movie though. It's an atmospheric dystopian movie that is more about the setting and characters than the action.
>Take off your nostalgia goggles and look at how patently ridiculous the movie actually is.
I never denied it's ridiculous. Mike said that he wanted the characters to be more over the top and that's a pretty dumb criticism. The movie is ridiculous but it's also gritty and atmospheric. The characters being over the top caricatures would completely ruin the gritty tone.
>>
>>70750433
>If you're watching what is supposed to be an action movie, these are perfectly valid complaints.

Remember in an old Star Trek Plinkett video when Mike was gushing over the ending of a random TNG episode where the "action" ending was walking down a hallway? That's how a lot of people feel about Escape From NY. The action is sparse and not huge, but it has meaning and Snake really feels out of his element and over his head the whole movie.

>Take off your nostalgia goggles and look at how patently ridiculous the movie actually is.

Mike's complaint is that the characters still aren't zany enough. He wanted them more zany! Bascially, he wanted Escape from LA levels of over the top.

He wanted pure shlock from a movie that was good because it played itself with a darker tone. All his critiques being addressed basically gives us Escape from LA.

It sounds like you haven't watched any recent RLM videos. Jay was pretty beta in the Jurassic World review but lately he has been defending his opinions. In their review of Captain America: Civil War he disagreed with Mike many times and pretty much the entire Escape from New York re:View video is Jay defending his opinions.
>>
>>70750659

>I never denied it's ridiculous. Mike said that he wanted the characters to be more over the top and that's a pretty dumb criticism. The movie is ridiculous but it's also gritty and atmospheric. The characters being over the top caricatures would completely ruin the gritty tone.

That was part of his argument though, that the characters already are kind of over the top and ridiculous and there are many schlock elements. For him it didn't work as a gritty dark film because it doesn't essentially take itself so seriously and many of the characters are sort of goofy, but on the other hand it plays it too straight to work as a fun goofy action movie. For him it's one or the other in this case, because those two tones didn't mix that well for Mike.
>>
>>70750956

His point wasn't that it had to be schlock, but that it had all the dressings of schlock without going full-silly and being entertaining via schlockiness. Instead it dressed as schlock but was this weird quiet atmospheric thing instead.

I agree more with Jay than with Mike, but I get his point. It isn't as simple as "I like schlock". It was "this thing was almost schlock but went off in a strange direction instead, and maybe it should have just been schlock."
>>
>>70755716
i wonder if he ever considered that the problem might be with his expectations and not the movie itself.

Literally none of his complaints have to do with his expectations and everything to do wi how he feels the film executed it's ideas.

This series has really made me realize how much I don't like the 80's. To the extent of me researching and figuring that movies made a huge drop in quality after 1983. Good movies came out but the big ones were never the same. And it was all because Hollywood stopped writing checks to geniuses and just letting them run wild and started to manufacture blockbusters. Scorcese and Ford Coppola talk about this shift a lot and if anyone they are probably the best reliable sources, both of them working through both eras and being uncompromising to this day.

Robocop is the only one of the "perfect movies" post-1983 that I see as salvageable. Aliens is shlock, Terminator 2 is dumb, Tremors isn't even that great, and the 80's gave us the shitty ending that is Return of the Jedi. Its like the expectations are so fucking low that anything that is decent makes it as a classic. Films got way too fucking easy and conditioned people to expect that easiness.

Popular Films pre-1983: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Sting, The Exorcist, JAWS, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Wrath of Khan, Empire Strikes Back, the Godfather, A Clockwork Orange, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Mad Max, Chinatown, The Shining, The Thing, Halloween, Raging Bull, Blade Runner, motherfucking ROCKY

Popular Films post-1983: The Goonies, Aliens, Top Gun, Stand By Me, Gremlins, Die Hard, The Lost Boys, Big

And so many films released since are just copies of those above. It wasn't until people like Fincher, PTA, and the Cohen Bros. started working through the system in the 90's that real, personal visions came back. And they're here but there's also the ever-present shlock.

His opinion has definitely begun to fall more in line with mine as of late, which is weird because in the beginning I feel like I used to agree with Mike more.

I find myself agreeing with Rich Evans the least, though. He's likable, but it never really feels like he knows what he's talking about. His opinions feel like those of someone trying to be a bit more jaded and intelligent without the actual critical thinking to back it up.

Mad Max 2, the superior movie, came out in the 80s.

There's no mention of any De Palma film. He made amazing work in the 70s and 80s.

The 80s was dominated by genre affair. Horror turned into a cash cow earning and animation started to rise, only to get huge in the 90s.

Also comedies were king. Eddie Murphey was a god and people adored John Hughes and his brat pack work.

Rich's opinions often feel like a contrarian cynical 4chan poster, but every once in a blue moon he really is genuinely funny. His crank calls to VHS toll free numbers are pure gold. MUCH funnier when he's put on the spot than when he's sitting mulling over a joke

Jay pretty much decimated him with the last remark, that the things Mike was asking for was exactly what Escape From LA had, and that movie was awful. Though I like both movies.
>>
>>70761074
AidsMoby said she was friends with him since early adulthood, and she met Mike through him because he knew Mike from the filmmaker scene, and Jack enlisted Mike's help for making some video for her terrible indie band.

The update date of the music video in question is after the Plinkett reviews first came out.
