I'm starting to think this is all just an underhanded marketing technique.
I never saw the original Ghostbusters and, as such, never grew up with it exercising whatever profound influence all of these die-hard fans claim it has. So I really don't care that they're doing this. Movies are remade constantly to pull in easy cash from nostalgia.
And I swear this movie is no different but, foreseeing audience's criticisms of another cheap remake, the studio's just decided to invert the genders and package it as this huge blow on behalf of women's rights. I'm more liberal than most of 4chan, I'd bet, but I fail to see how simply taking one old movie and flipping the genders is this novel, groundbreaking way to fight sexism. Defenders say, "women need heros too!" Absolutely right. They do need positive characters to look up to. Why, then, aren't new movies simply created with said strong female leads? Why no originality?
