Anon, I hate to break it to you but that's how writers illustrate intelligence.
It's one of the great flaws of fiction - an author can't write a character that is smarter than he is. All they can do is make the other characters dumb and tally the difference.
Without knowing better, people often bring this thinking into the story of their own lives. They come to believe that lowering others will in turn raise them, instead of working to raise themselves.

I find it really embarassing when writers call their characters Psycho/Sociopaths when they haven't got a clue what those things really are. It's like they're holding up a sign that says "Okay so this character is weird and smart at the same time and will say things normal people find odd."
