>>

FUCK YEAH.

Alright, 80's script nigga here. I've run into some bumps in the road, so I'm gonna be taking a break from that script for a while while I get my life together.

In the meantime, I've got a couple other ideas that I'm thinking of trying, and next weekend I'm gonna shoot and edit a really short documentary on my friends and our trip to a convention that's hitting town.

A movie being made on a bet. A bet that I can't get something made for under a thousand Canadian dollars onto Canadian Netflix. Im fully convinced that I can get any old shit onto there, based on the amount of pure shit that's already present. The running total only counts money I spend after production begins, so previously obtained gear and pirated software doesn't count. We settled on a horror movie about the ghost of a 16th century castrato singer going around cutting peoples balls off. $10 has been spent so far, on a slightly used priest gown. Currently looking for a guy with no facial hair who can do a half decent falsetto.
>>
>>70666387
Holy shit bro, I'm 100% behind this.

I can actually do a half-decent falsetto but due to several factors (look like a fat Mexican, haven't sung in a while, don't live in Canada) I don't think I can help you bruv.

Had this idea for an animated show about a middle-class family trying to decide whether to be Democrat or Republican. The son is definitely a Democrat, but the daughter is a staunch Republican. The parents can't decide. The baby is a libertarian wiseacre.

I never got to see many of the 90's cyberpunk movies but when I got to Johnny Mnemonic, I was pissed. That ending, kek. Anyways, I kind of missed the emotion in the crying scene tbqh. Maybe have the camera focus more on their faces, or make the camera look a bit more down on them instead of directly facing them, in my opinion it would've gotten a better effect.

Similar.

I'm currently thinking about a thematic for a docu short or commercial for my video production class. I was thinking about filming a botanical garden nearby but I'm afraid it's really hard to make it interesting. It's not even that pretty. Hard when I'm alone without any equipment aside from a phone and an old shitty point&shoot.

But I have to find an idea no matter what. If I don't even have any ideas how the fuck could I ever be a filmmaker? I have to work on that.

Well, I guess it's also partly because of my restrictions so I can't even try to think of something more complicated.

really Robert McKee is the best.

Because besides the formatting (which actually has little to do with writing) there isnt really a sure fire tutorial to writing.

Theres just a few formulas and mostly dynamics and structures. But most importantly its the artistic discipline. And just feedbacking with people. If you know nothing about writing its just a matter of writing a draft and getting it through people for proper feedback and rewriting it (untill it becomes almost tedious).

It's a continuation of the series. Billy and Kate's kids are going to get into all kinds of trouble when their parents go away on vacation and leave them Gizmo to babysit.

It's gonna be all animatronics. Absolutely no CGI. I just gotta think of some meme worthy Gremlins with good pop culture references. There will be a few nods to the originals but they'll be subtle just for that nostalgia.

Critique is always at place. Feedback is not since it was a year ago. I wanted to do so many thing different even before shooting. But at a certain point things roll and you just take defeat after defeat. Its why I hate directing. But my main flaw, considering what other films got more attention, I wished I made something more accessible bit more cheesy.

>>70691285
No we crowdfunded it through cinecrowd (dutch crowd funding) filmfonds does not do studentfilms. The sponsoring was mainly through camera people (DOP and gaffer) cutting deals with companies (singlefilm, cam a a lot) for which they had worked before.

Supernatural fantasy about an aspiring black rapper who gets placed in an elite New England boarding school after he scores a 158 on an IQ test. He confronts bias in the form of his oppressive white headmaster and fellow students, who he can't relate to. After suffering a nasty racist prank, he runs into the forest and discovers the campus is built upon an ancient Indian burial ground. Through the help of his white love interest, he is able to decipher runes and summon a Native American spirit who gives him the power to seek revenge on his privileged oppressors.

Primary influences: Mekas, Famuyiwa, Lee.
>>
>>70691618
Cinecrowd has a 40 days period or an 80 days period. The final editing for Dark Blood (with the late River Phoenix by George Sluizer) was funded through it. usually for smaller projects its 40 days. Don't expect much from them they won't help you access sources that easily. And they require a campaign plan and 2 page document and teaser before they will put your campaign online.

Also in general its fucking hell. Get a producer for it because its basically begging and social media in a full-time position.

>>70691387
I'll start with my biggest critique, which is that it's about an unemployed, early-mid 20s guy who doesn't really do anything. That is a hard area in which to break new ground and do something unique. If you are targeting the film festival circuit you want your short to have a strong central narrative. There were some areas in which the script got cliche. I predicted the actors saying "what do you do," "At least I'm trying," and "new age bullshit" before the words came out of their mouths. I'm not sure if there was some meta-commentary going on, but it didn't come across that way. You have a good eye for taking interesting shots, but I wanted to ask about the editing. Most of the conversations between characters featured close ups that cut back and forth rather frequently as each character spoke. I can se why you might take that approach but I found it distracting. I wanted to spend more time with the characters with longer shots. But that is also my personal preference about how cinema should be made, I'm more of a minimalist. You have a talent for coaching actors. The chemistry between the lead and the girl was the highlight of the film, and her brother also gave a good performance. I would encourage you to keep making films despite your frustration. Perhaps work a bit more on your ideas and your script before you bring another project to fruition.

>>70692033
It's impossible to do everything at once. If you don't have good sound your movie is going to suck. Same with lighting. Make sure to understand the basics of those and then tap into your friends to be amateur crew members and pay them in food/booze/weed if you don't have the funds to hire professionals.

>>70691812
kickstart it
>>
I'm in an interesting and, i expect, rather unique position.

I went to a film school that isn't really well known, but still learned a lot. Made 3 short films there, one in each of my first three years, and then instead of making a thesis film, I was just the DP on my roommate's, because the idea I came up with is something I plan on turning into my first feature. Got a bunch of friends together to agree to be the creative/production team, and we got funding through one of the producer's uncles, who is a big wig at Sunkist, and basically gave us 10 grand in return for a producer credit.

So, now what? Do we just make this thing now? We're all based out of NYC, so it's not like we'd need to search hard for actors who will work for free. Some people on the team want to look for more money though.
>>
>>70692483
just do it, make sure your script and production planning are rock solid before you actually take the jump. 10k is pretty low budget for a full feature but if the film is interesting enough you might be able to generate some buzz. Make sure you do research don't step on any union toes. Here in chicago the union filmmakers own the town

I accept your critique. I could defend every statement but thats not whats its about. I already made it, its there in its final form, its there for my to accept all the critique that people drop on it.. thats not to say that I didnt read your message and just simply brushed over it. Its the fact thats its there in its final form and say " yea but" no longer applies.

On an adding note. I had a big fight with my teacher about me casting him as the main lead. She didn't think he had it in him (my teacher won the dutch oscar three times in row) But I think he fucking killed it, she took back her comment after she saw the final product.

"Perhaps work a bit more on your ideas and your script before you bring another project to fruition."

As for this comment. It was a graduation project, so there was no time to deflect and regroup as that would mean another year of study. You get caught up in a momentum and once you ride it, you gotta roll.

And I was never really interesting in the festival circuit, I wanted to make my own thing. Luckily a few people picked up on this and its why I'm doing a QnA this weekend. Its for a limited sort of crowd. But for sure not the best career move to make.

I heard about BFF. I might be there (although I'm not sure if I can make it). Good luck!

is ze verliefd op hem in een figuurlijke of letterlijke zin

Figuurlijk natuurlijk. But mostly that after seeing the casting tapes, she was not convinced at all. But afterwards she changes her mind. And she actually did a play with him. Because she was so in love with his acting.

Hes a great guy tho. Because normally he's really social but for the shooting he really studied me, Started taking on the weird shaking habit and constantly running his hands through his hairs. even my mother saw that all the gingery and anxious habit came straight from me. Good actor.

how did you get a job as an editor?
did you just apply and say you had experience?

>Figuurlijk natuurlijk
Hey, je weet het nooit met 40+ers :^)

Yea we're definitely planning everything out as much as possible. I'm actually really unclear about union things. Would people really get mad at a bunch of people just trying to make a movie? NY is a big enough town.
>>
Watching people here making great shit and winning awards makes me feel bad. Is there any chance for people without academy in today's world?
>>
>>70694307
go out and shoot something, even if it's shit
edit things together
keep doing it consciously until you get better
>>
>>70694167
It just depends on the laws and collective bargaining agreements. I know my uncle has done special effects work for commercials in chicago and does a great impersonation of your typical chicago union asshole who wants a piece of the pie. If you want production advice you should check out r/Filmmakers, I don't really use that website but it is a good resource of professionals who work in the industry. There is a weekly question thread every monday.

Internship as a transcriber, reality shows always need transcribing. Assistants don't edit though, they're more for organizing and IT
>>
>>70694486
Sounds great! I'm currently preparing my first film and it would be great to talk to some other people about it. I'm going to sleep right now, but I'll save the url and join tomorrow.

Good luck at the festival!

Sup. I've been working on this short for months in my free time and I'm enjoying the process.

Do you guys have any tips for festivals?

c'mon man dont let that shit get you down original ideas don't exist the personal sensibilities are what counts

This
This is all I think about 24/7. I don't know what to do
>>
>>70695189
i am you and you are me

my best advice is to start figuring out how to use the stuff you're going to have to use later. like NLEs, sound design and editing, coloring, c4d like i said above. i've been at it for a little while and am far and away more proficient at this shit than i was before.

buy a dslr and screw around with it too. you eventually learn how to camera op. and watch all the shit on youtube about cinematography.

>>70677271
fuckin bozo the clown
uhh cameraman needs to stop breathing so hard
the music needs to be lowered etc
>>
>>70671314
no ideas are original
start writing. originality comes in your handling of the subject.

Request to check on and give instructions to the projectionist at the theater, if they don't require you to do so anyways. I guarantee you, he WILL fuck up with your colors, your contrast, your everything, if you don't give him good solid instruction on how you want your fucking picture to look.
>>
>>70695474
Thanks for the info.

Yes I've noticed this with smaller screenings. The colors and the grade are always fucked.

but yeah, i'm grading in sRGB since my monitor doesn't do rec709.

good call

>>70695297
i'm feeling kind of optimistic about it, I mean i have a lot of time to figure this shit out.

thanks for the advice, I really need it. god knows i'm not smart enough to be an important scientist- and i'd do anything to not end up being an intern or a fat mom.
>>
>>70671314
IK that feel pretty well. I thought up a script idea one time as I was falling asleep and when I woke up I realized my plot twist was similar to fight club which I've only seen once like 8 years ago.
>>
bump for the dutchman

also
fucking going to outline the shit of my script. and even so, I realize how much it is to fill up a page with quality and not garbage, 60 goes down to 40 if I'm lucky.
any help?

Step outline, then write, then rewrite, then rewrite, then rewrite until satisfied.

Slasher short film script I'm filming this november

What do I do if I live in a central american country where the film industry is basically non existant, do I make short films and hope to get into american festivals? or should I just kill myself? Currently writing two short films which could later turn into features
>>
>>70701233
>do I make short films and hope to get into american festivals?
It's the only thing you can do tbf
>>
What can I do to capture an 80's nightlife aesthetic given that I have almost no access to proper lighting materials and am basically shooting on-the-fly?

I'm gonna be at a con next week with some friends and I wanted to do a short documentary that draws from the opening of The Warriors, plus I might just write something quick for the fuck of it, get some practice in.
