Roman Polanski
>>
>>70638881

His films are poorly written, poorly edited, every camera set up or scene construction is a master class in how to be as unimaginative as possible. He takes good ideas and he makes mediocre films out of them. He's a professional waster of ideas. His films range from boring to laughable.

Even if you're blinded by the idea on the first watch, it only takes a second watch before you realize there's literally nothing there. The narratives unfold like shit because he's a formalist at heart who doesn't care about plot or characters, but unlike the great cinema formalists, his technique is garbage. It'd be better for him if he did care about his characters and then he could be some sentimental hack like Rob Reiner and act like form doesn't matter when you've got stories to tell. As it stands, though, he's successful only at tricking 14 year old boys into thinking he's like totally deep, bro.

EWS is Kubrick's worst unless we're talking about faith to adaptation of the source material, in which case The Shining is the worst.

EWS is only held high because it was his last and he died shortly after. Even Cruise's acting is mediocre, which is rare for him.

Not that guy, but EWS is my favorite Kubrick and in my opinion his best. In terms of total cohesion to a theme and enjoyability.

Plus saying any major Kubrick is "Kubrick's worst" is stupid considering Fear and Desire and that other shit. And also the fact that Clockwork Orange is mediocre as fuck.
>>
>>70640543
Malcolm McDowell made Clockwork what it is. The scene where he returns to the old man's house with David Prowse was fucking excellent. Plus Kubrick's modified dark ending that strayed from the book was good. Subjective opinions I guess, I enjoyed it way more than EWS.

I'm not particularly religious or atheistic, but the Passion of the Christ is a great film. For someone to really think it was bad they have to have some kind of other vested interests in my opinion. I can't get close to imagining a better way of telling that story on the screen than the way that Mel did it.

Of we're talking best Mel Hinson film, Apocalypto has to be mentioned. I absolutely loved that movie. Great action, good humor, beautiful looking. Way better that Passion.

Spartacus is absolute garbage. You have three actors giving stunning performances, which is a good thing, then you have a mess of a script, completely lacking in any form of subtlety, forced and lazy political "ideas" without any form of backdrop and forethought, a director who is clearly disinterested in the movie, scenes shot by other directors which are ridiculously different in regards to tone and scope. It's garbage. Dalton Trumbo a shit.

>"Although uncredited, he is also responsible for directing the first hour of Spartacus. Due to differences with the film’s star/producer, Kirk Douglas, he was replaced with Stanley Kubrick. Dan Sallitt of the LA Reader writes the following about the film: "Reports and interviews suggest, and stylistic analysis confirms, that the first hour of this 1960 epic about the Roman slave revolt was almost entirely directed by Anthony Mann, though Stanley Kubrick receives sole directorial credit."

Should have let the master finish would he started. Would have been a great film.
