While I agree, I have a feeling his tenure in SNL really hurt his ambition and chance of mainstream success. He was too edgy for Lorne and NBC and they killed him off when he was getting the highest ratings with Update and writing the best sketches. Then after that they sabotaged Dirty Work marketing and basically forced him out of the entertainment industry by claiming he was "difficult" and eccentric. Of course the real reason was because he didn't give a fuck about pandering and legitimately wanted to be a great comic instead of a performing monkey.

It's like you don't even watch him or pay attention. He's said numerous times that he thinks anyone who rigidly prescribes to one side is an idiot. The only thing he's concerned with really is being funny.
Artie Lange told a story once about how Norm isn't really even religious. And then there's the story Glass told about how Norm first argued in favor of slapping children just to provoke people, and then made a super eloquent argument about why it's actually wrong.
