Also the free-form style of the film was neat.
Room was a good character study, I wouldn't describe it as exploitative trash at all. Sure, it was based in part on real life incidents but it wasn't a fact-by-fact case study. It fleshed out its themes and character arc.
Martian, whatever. Mostly by the numbers shit, but I did appreciate the mileage Ridley Scott got out of wind on a tarp in that scene where Damon's freaking out trying to sleep
