Favorite older Hollywood films?
The Bitter Tea of General Yen.
That sweet sweet pre-code Hollywood.
Ernst Lubitsch is amazingly underrated. The Smiling Lieutenant is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

The restored version of Wings I watched was fantastic. It was easy to forget it was a silent film.
The 1938 Marie Antoinette with Norma Shearer. I have a soft spot for older historical epics. Shame that they had to scrap plans for color.

Pre-code period is great

I kind of like films that were on the cusp of pre-code and code. Madame du Barry with Dolores del Rio was filmed before the crackdowns, but premiered after them--so a lot of scenes were forced on the cutting room floor. Yet surprisingly a scene where Louis XV educates Louis XVI on sex by having some barely clad women dance around him while he shows him the 18th century equivalent of a porn magazine still made it...
Either Samson & Delilah or Sign of the Cross, if they're old enough for this thread.

I think that even after it took effect many people in the industry still didn't take it seriously, and the Hays Office let some things slide because it was still new.

Eh, they exemplify the best of the extremes of popular-release filmmaking up to that time.
