What happened to posters like this one?
too expensive and offensive
Didn't have half a dozen Agents/Managers crawling all over it demanding that their client get 12% of the available space, or that their name is just larger larger than Actor C's.
These days posters are pretty much design by committee in a constant three-way fight between the studio, producers and actors' agents. By the time all the conditions and so forth get to the artist/designer there's SFA for them to do - no input of their own.
Hence the abortions of posters we get now.

Anon above is right.
Most posters these days need to accommodate space for a dozen special snowflakes, so pretty much all of them end up looking like le badass team posing, which is only understandable for movies like The Expendables.
Can you imagine how shit soviet posters would have been if Molotov's third mistress had insisted on being on it.
they have a cookie cutter template graphic design interns use now to save precious shekels
>>70522270
They need closeup shots so they can fit in that mandatory one eyed illuminati pose.
>>70522270
Somehow movie marketing costs skyrocketed and yet the quality of movie posters deteriorated.
>>70522270
They moved to Freshman Dormatories.
They have been replaced by sleek, modern, minimalistic posters that are obviously superior unless you are pleb trash
Everything is plastic and digital these days. Movie posters just changed along with the rest of society.

video killed the radiostar
internet killed the videostar
etc
I remember before the multiplexes arrived in our eastern europian country, in our local theaters used to have a big painted version about the movie posters in the front gate. It was nice.
The theatre was comfy too, it was a classicist like hotel before. pic related.
this type of posters look awesome

This. I used to love Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo in my teens, like every other edgy/metal/d&d/mtg kid.
Besides, this art style hasn't aged particularly well.

i dont know anything about Boris Vallejo, but Franzetta's stuff is objectively solid art wise. It looks a bit old but its not tacky.

A graphic designer posted on reddit's /r/movies a year or two ago and explained the modern poster design process. He wrote that when he gets a commission to do a poster it comes with so many conditions and riders that there's very little he can provide in terms of input - it's pretty much all already decided by the time it reaches him. The studio insists on having this basic design; the producers want a title done like that; the actors billing and position/poses on the poster are so intertwined that it can only be done in a limited number of ways and not upset them; etc.
Then once he's run it up and sent it back to all concerned to additional input he usually got something back like, "the best colours for this I feel would be orange and blue". That's why the all come out looking the same.
You can bet your arse that the only concern about that Conan poster OP provided was how striking it should look. The only condition there would have been: "just don't make it look like Frazetta's work too much or we'll have to pay him even more money..."
>>70526351
I never said it was tacky, it's just dated.
>>70526705
Like I said, you'll be more interested in those themes in puberty. Then you move on to other things that stimulate you.

Contractual terms. Highest paid has his name listed first I think.

From the artist himself:
>What was your degree of liberty?
-The job was done completely by myself, presenting sketches to Dino De Laurentiis personally - he approved one among many presented images. After his approval, I did the final key art.

>>70526169
You mother fucker. Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell's are still great artwise.
Frazetta is literally the pioneer of that type of artwork. You say 'dated' like an insult. But Frazetta isn't dated if he invented it. You can say that Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell's work is only 'dated' in the same respect that a neoclassical painter like John William Godward is 'dated' because he is painting Greek shit. Just because fantasy painting isn't the #1 popular artwork right now doesn't mean it's any worse or wrong. They still manage to find work and sell their paintings. Hell even Frank Frazetta's daughters are reviving his paintings and merchandising them to people today. There is still demand.
>>70527741
but did you suck him off?
yeah, didn't think so. faggot.
>>70527474
Yes, most fans of those themes and art are teenagers. I established than in my first post.
>and there's that ad hom again!
It's not ad hominem if it's based on the content of your post. You do have shit reading comprehension.
