Saw Warcraft yesterday and can't understand why so many bad reviews. It's a flawed movie, yes, but it's issues were more of pacing than the content. The same issues films like the new Star Wars had.

What did you guys though of it?
>>
Immature audience that can't stand pulpy high fantasy.
>>
I think a lot of the negativity is based on how unpopular the game is right now

if it had come out during the peak of subs in wrath I think the general reception would have been better
>>
>>70471383

I saw it too and i know why bad reviews, they fucked it up, they didnt explain anything! To normal viewer who doesnt know the lore it looks like they fighting for the sake of fighting....
>>
>>70471383
does it have kungfuu pandas in it?
>>
>>70471457
You think all those critics are Burning Crusade Purists?

No they are the same people who turned their nose at concept of playing a video game never mind World of Warcraft.
>>
>>70471581
>normal viewer can't understand why kingdom would fight against crazy alien raiders

sounds about right. normal people should be culled
>>
>>70471581
I never played the games and I could follow it just fine. Sure the people who did play them might go fanboying because their favorite orc or city is on the screen, but the story was easy to follow. And Gul'dan is the best villain of the 2010s
>>
>>70471581
Only played Warcraft 3 and didn't give a shit about the story. I could understand the plot easily. There were other issues with it.
>>
>>70471665

You dont understand the point, people should know that Orcs came because Medivh send vision of Azeroth to Guldan by the influence of Sargeras, Orcs only purpose was to weaken its defenses and prepeare world for Burning Legion invasion... That was whole point of the story but they didnt told it, so its pointless!>>70471707

Terrible marketing, terrible pacing of the movie, and the stigma of the fact it's a ultra high fantasy movie and people hate that shit. Game of Thrones is probably about as much fantasy as most can handle. Also critics are being faggots on purpose but who cares. Money talks not reviews. it'll make enough world wide for a sequel. the dawn of vidyakino has begun.
Could have been better but it's 100% not as bad as people are making out to be, not by a long shot. 45-55% on RT would have been fair and accurate.
>>
It is a Warcraft movie in which someone cries every two seconds

Think about it for a moment
>>
>>70471658
Yeah probably true

But I do think there was a time when warcraft as a property was less looked down on. That could be because that was when I was a fat shit in highschool among other fat shits in highschool. Or maybe it was when they made the kung fu panda expansion.
>>
>>70471383
The pacing was terrible, the cgi was horrible at times and it didn't know how to introduce/develop most characters properly.

The content and the story were ok and it was fun, but it isn't a really well made movie.

Movie should have been much longer to allow proper character development.

Those of us that know the characters and the story already enjoyed the movie.

Also, Obligatory, GUL'DAN IS BASED AS FUCK.
>>
>>70472098

gul'dan was so good desu

and the cgi was flawless aswell. Was worried at first because of the trailers but it was just amazing in the cinema.

warcraft 2 can't come soon enough
>>
Does Sargeras actually appear?

If so that's fucking stupid.
>>
>>70472317

Medivh steps into a pool of fel and his body starts turning in what i assume was Sargeras. Gets killed before he does anything though, and turns back to Medivh.
>>
>>70472241
Gul'dan is my favorite WC character.
i was expecing him to be really weak in the movie...

He ended up being better than troy baker on WoD, it was amazing.

>>70472317
They mention a demon in the film, very breafly.
sargeras does not appear.

But we know hes the one who gave gul'dan his powers.
>>
>>70472486
>>70472486

He doesn't appear? What was that demon taking over Medivh then?
>>
I saw an ad for the movie at the bottom of the screen during Shark Tank. Who is in charge of advertising for this? They've done a terrible job. I've hardly seen any advertising in other places, especially those where I'd expect to find the target audience.
>>

High fantasy played straight is critical cancer. It's not based on any currently highly-valued IP and it goes against the current trends of dark/low fantasy. Combine that with rushed pacing and hokey fantasy jargon and you get an critically panned movie.
I hope the 10+ million people who have played the Warcraft games are enough to make it succeed at the box office because it's not an objectively bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.

They did better than the new Star Wars IMO. It did please many fans but it didn't do it in a "lol look your favorite characters xDDD" way.

Yes, they fucked up some intros due to cut content but other than that it was a pretty solid movie and they really showed that they actually cared for the games. The music and details were great and the style was game-ish and not trying to be realistic, which is something that actually improves the movie.
Were they expecting some grimdark shit style? It's fantasy. There's horrible kills, there's plenty of innocents dying and there's world-shattering magic fucking shit up but it looks flashy because it was based on something which was flashy to begin with. Overall a pretty solid movie.

The major flaw of the movie is that it was trying to tell too much... but it didn't. Those who played the games will instantly get the whole thing and enjoy the movie, but the rest will probably feel that there's something missing. Let's hope all the cut content fixes this issue.

Also the king looked like something straight out of Excalibur, which is something I really liked.
>>
>>70475210

Problem is they wasted screen time on Garona and Lothar flick which is irrelevant to the story and they neglected completly the point and cliff hanger for the second movie which is forming of alliance and invasion of Burning Legion! Also the pupet master Sargeras, missed chance.
>>
>>70476875
The problem is that they cut 40 minutes of matherial. It's almost third part of the movie. I'm sure there are a lot of important and interesting moments which make movie much better. I have no idea why did they thought that make film shorter is good for audience.
>>
>>70471788
How does any of that shit matter? If you don't introduce Sargeras and the Legion and all these other assholes then it's really pointless to try and deliver a bunch of exposition about shit you have no interest in. Not to mention that trying to cram all that shit in would be too much.

Guldan is corrupting the orcs and he wants to take over the world. That's all that really matters. If you want to deal with the legion and all that then the natural point for that would be Thrall and his story which is all about cleansing the orcs from corruption. Other than that you could just have a straight prequel that's all about Ner'zhul Gul'dan and Kil'jaiden
>>
>>70476875
They kinda formed the alliance at the end of the movie at the king's funeral. Then shouted "For Azeroth, for the alliance!"

The invasion of the Burning Legion will be in the third movie, if at all.

They might skip it completely so they can tell the Thrall story and finish with a happy ending when moses leads the orcs to the promised land (Durotar).

>t. someone who hasn't seen the movie
>>
>>70477397
desu I cringed at how much they fucked up with wow and Diablo 3, but they actually delivered a decent movie. It's a movie that didn't try to fit or ride on any pop trend, it just tried to be a good videogame based movie without being fanservice: the movie, which starwars did and the critics fucking loved it even though not even the music was remarkable.

I, for one, I'm happy with the movie not being just another carbon copy of some popular fantasy.
They did show us a bit of the world of Azeroth and they made it work. Elves and orcs looking like the real deal and footmein with their tactics and armor. It was enjoyable.
I wonder who would play Kel' Thuzad if they made an Arthas movie.

>Final is Full Arthas becoming the LK, Illidan runs to Outland and the 2 factions are created

You can do it by just focusing on orcs and humans.

https://twitter.com/ManMadeMoon/status/738868880773283840

I'm not to clear about the chronology in WC3, but I think Thrall escapes captivity, unites the orcs, moves to Kalimdor and settles in Durotar all before the Horde and the Alliance unite to fight the Burning Legion. Is that right?

Jones has mentioned that the third movie would end when the orcs find a new home.

I went in blind, dont know much about warcraft.

Story was very easy to follow, cgi was amazing, but that's it. Felt a little bland, to try hard I guess?

Its great for fans dont get me wrong, I'm sure it made fans happy, but the movie was just bad.

I enjoyed The Huntsman more, and some other comic book hero movies. I would even dare to say Batman vs Superman was better.

Sorry, but it's just my opinion. If you enjoyed, good on you. If you like warcraft, you'll probably enjoy it. If you don't or are oblivious to it. You won't.

Nonetheless as someone who knows the lore but not really a purist, I followed it pretty well, Sargeras was foreshadowed, Medivh admitted to be the one that lead the orcs to Azeroth(which implies he had a motivation of some sort which might be explained in the second film), and I was quite surprised by how well the Orcs were portrayed, the "realer than real" meme kinda became reality.

It's unpopular because the story is shit.

It's ok when you are playing the game because you are the hero and you make your story.
>>
>>70482420
I also liked the cameo of the Kirin Tor, the High Elves, and the Dwarves. It seems they are aiming for many films of some sort seeing they are giving the other races proper build up unlike other films that just inserted characters for recognition and "oh lol im a part of this movie and an incoming collab movie xd"
>>
Movie critics hate video games so they take any opportunity to stick it to them, and video game movies are the #1 golden opportunity. The movies are usually awful though so it works out, but even if they're just average they'll get slammed anyway.

Grommash Hellscream is in the movie? Where the fuck was he? I watched it two times and I've never spotted him, I thought he would be introduced in the second wave of the Horde.

Long hair orc. Appears before blackhand kills mini ragnar and in the dark portal fight
>>
>>70482708
he appears the entire movie standing at gul'dan's side
he's also the one who leads Garona to Gul'Dan after she kills the King in front of Blackhand and throws his corpse to the Horde, before Lothar arrives

there was a scene of him talking with Orgrim in some kind of campfire, but it got cut out from the theatrical version

Saw it 20 min ago. Didn't think it was as bad as the ratings, but it wasn't amazing either. I can understand it being confusing for ignorant people, and the editing wasn't great.

It was mostly fun to see Azeroth on the big screen
>>
>>70471383
>can't understand why so many bad reviews
Too many hands handing the movie, and it shows: Universal executives, Metzen and ftriends, and Duncan.
>>
I'm borderline normie and I'm hyped to see this high fantasy shit, bring on the dwarves and mages and the CGI, the idea of making a video game into such a huge, expensive project sounds so outlandish it might be good. Is this 3 hours long like LOTR?
If it's not completely, completely shit I think I'll enjoy myself watching it, can't wait to see giant orcs and armies and shit. I'm ready to go full pleb don't have anybody who will watch it with me yet though :^(
>>
I've never played the game before. I can take my brother to see any movie for free with him next week, and I don't want to throw my ticket away. It's either TMNT2 (he didn't like the first one to begin with) or this, I don't see anything else of interest. Of course, I want to have fun too, and none of us have played warcraft. Is this worth... our time?
>>
>>70484376
I doubt any flick on this planet can be worse than TNMT2 anon. Haven't seen it myself tho and don't play the games either but if I had to choose between those two it would be a no-brainer.

What movie can this be compared to? Avatar?
>>
>>70484376

warcraft is colorful, a bit campy, epic, emotional, a bit gory and a somewhat family-friendly film (went to see with my parents and young sister, they all enjoyed it and laughed during the humorous scenes)

tmnt 2 is as dumb and noisy as the first one and brutally painful to watch

warcraft is light-years better than tmnt

i may sound like a shill, but warcraft is a really fun movie
>>
If I want to delve into the warcraft world and lore is there any novel to read or do I really need to play the games?
>>
>>70484434
No, i'd say Avatar is a better movie. This is John Carter of Mars tier. See it in 3D on a big screen and its good fun. And it is something a little bit different.

I haven't seen TMNT 2 but i've heard its just more of the same, and a bit mean spirited.
>>
>>70484434
i can't find any movie similar to Warcraft, anon, it's really hybrid

think about LOTR meets Avatar meets John Carter meets Clash of Titans meets Pacific Rim

>>70484637

Warcraft is years better than John Carter, anon

>>70484529

it's recommendable, my only base for the wc lore was the third game campaign, and it was enough to understand this movie
>>
>>70483943
to be fair warcraft 1 had different endings for both campaigns that were contradictory (humans pushing back orcs and orcs conquering stormwind)

warcraft 2 was the same (expansions changed that and made campaigns linear)

wow and novels retconed it a bit picking elements from both storylines and merging them into one, definitive but still
>>
>>70484730
>Warcraft is years better than John Carter, anon
i liked warcraft and I would recomend it but I don't think it's better movie, JC was pretty solid and had no pacing issues, effects were top noch and it was more true to the source material
>>
>>70484529
The details of the movie story are slightly different from that in the games and related novels.

There is a movie prequel novel called Durotan, and a novel of the game universe called "The Last Guardian". Both by Christie Golden. The details of the last guardian are slightly different from the movie, but its basically the same.

There's also The Rise of the Horde by Golden which is about what happened on the orc home world before they went thru the portal. Similar in time and place to the movie prequel Durotan.

These books are all downloadable as pdfs if you google and theres some audio versions on youtube.

See

>>
>>70484529
you can also watch youtube videos of the cutscenes from WC1,2,3 and get a good idea of the pre-Word of Warcraft plot (and the plot of the potential Warcraft movie trilogy)
>>
>>70484954
dunno about the others but last guardian was a solid read, I read a lot, not so much of fantasy but I went in expecting some trashy novel like most of the star wars EU bullshit but it stood on its own

You should just play the game desu.

Skip Warcraft 1, but Warcraft 2 is a fun game.
>>
There's alot of lore in the games, but it kind of goes out of the window somewhere after the third WoW expansion. Too much retconning, time travel shenanigans, and just straight up not caring.
>>
I saw it today, I really don't see a 20% score, if I had to be harsh this would be a 60% or 6/10, but it's a solid 77%ish
>>
>>70471383
>>70471859
Felt the same about the pacing 40 mins cut. Can't wait to see the dirdctors cut

yes, lots. every story arc ends on a "...to be continued" note.
>>
>>70486654

There is

They form the Alliance, the Horde invades Azeroth, Gul'dan turns into some kind of dictator of the Horde, they show Varian being greeted by the King, hinting at his future friendship with Arthas, Garona becomes a Horde member under Gul'dan's misconception that she killed the King by her own reasons, Lothar gets promoted and his relationship with Garona is not resolved, and finally, baby Thrall is found by some human warriors and perform a little battlecry at them.

They also show the death of Medivh, and his promise of saving Azeroth from the Burning Legion arrival in Warcraft III.

So yeah.

Watched yesterday, the movie has some flaws like the rushed final and Lothar just being Rhaegar, but it's a solid 7/10.Even my marvel drone girlfriend agreed it was better than Civil War and TFA.

movie was fun and faulty

it feels a lot like it was directed by two polar opposite people. it was fresh in a weird way, but had a damn lot more potential

i really don't understand all the hate it's gotten though, i saw it before i saw the reviews it got, and actually thought critics would like it for all its eccentricities
