Give me your best horror movies (spooky thrillers allowed), I'm in the mood for a good spook tonight.

Also - How do we fix horror? Will it ever be good again?
>>
>>70423493
Was horror ever really good? It's never been a genre known for it's great movies. Anyway as a more recent example of a good horror flicks, I'd say The Evil Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, and 28 Days Later are all decent examples of horror done right.
>>
just watch Snowtown
>>
>>70423653
I think horror that rely more on suspense rather than muh jumpscares and gore have the ability to be good.

Psycho, The Exorcist, The Thing, Mothman Prophecies are all good movie imo
>>
>>70423493

Horror's picked up an absolute tonne these last few years - people seem to have learnt that tension and dread are more important than slasher chases and jump scares.
>>
>>70423881
This to be perfectly frank with you my brethren.

The noughties were a wasteland for the genre.
>>
>>70423779
>Psycho
>The Exorcist
>The Thing
This is why you don't ask for recommendations on /tv/. You might as well google top 10 lists.
>>
>>70423881
>>70424009
Yeah, it's not as if horror could really get much worse than it was in the noughties
>>
>>70423493
Intro and that scene were only good things about the Zodiac

then manlet quip jr showed up and began his buddy cop shtick.
>>
>>70423493

Not a list of my top ten but just a few that vaguely come to mind:

Jacob's Ladder
Kairo
Blair Witch
The Witch
The Conjuring
It Follows
28 Days Later
Mama

There are plenty of others and better ones im sure but i cant recall them as of now.

If you want newer films, It Follows and The Witch are pretty GOAT.
Silence of the Lambs remains a favorite. Also, I cannot recommend Sleep Away Camp enough. That film has so many hidden meanings and depth, it should be called horror-kino.
Oh, and Scream should be watched at least for the opening scene alone. One of the greatest openings to any film.
>>
>>70424215
The basement scene literally had me on the edge of my seat. When he picks up the lady in the car was quite scary aswell.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like the Zodiac again but more horror influenced.
>>
>>70424262

Try being less contrarian.

If you have any insight on the horror genre, especially in modern times, you'd realize why the popular ones are the ones being recommended. There are very, very few "hidden gems" when it comes to modern horror.

Wolf Creek 2 was good. Especially good for being a sequel.

Sort of reminded me of Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street in that it was almost a bit campy and didnt take itself too seriously.
>>
>>70424332

In my view it didn't do a single thing new, but it did everything the best it has been done. So that's why its included.

Stop samefagging anon
>>
>>70424402

Agreed, surprisingly good from a bad premise
>>
>>70424226

I'll add Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, The Thing and original Texas Chainsaw - it's not scary but worth it on the dinner scene alone.
>>
Watch Exeter, very underrated modern horror. Nothing groundbreaking, but its a good rendition of classic horror concepts
>>
>>70424337
It wasn't anon, learn to discern.
>>
Last Shift was a surprisingly great movie, fuck the score on IMDB, it was like a cross between Silent Hill and Martyrs set in a claustophobic environment. Get ready for some stupid decisions but it's honestly worth looking over, as the whole movie is set like a dream and nothing really makes sense.

Seriously, give it a try, it's one of my favourites from the 2000's.
>>
>>70423493
Zodiac was a good movie ruined by terrible acting from everyone except the fat suspect, RDJ and Jake Gyllenhaal and some odd "wow guys look how real this is, the guy is doing random stuff, not at all scripted" script choices
>>
>>70424563

Personally bad decisions and ineffective screaming protagonists ruin horror for me. Same reason i think the Shining is one of the worst horrors i've ever seen.
>>
Zombeavers is surprisingly competent, has a decent plot, great effects, not horrible humor, and every female is a top qt. Going to watch Zoombies soon
>>
>>70423493

Cosmic horror like The Mist and Event Horizon might be good? I'll warn that neither of them are horror films as such, event horizon is even goofy - but the premises are horrific.
>>
>>70424563
Another one I'd recommend is Necromentia. Again, IMDB score means fuck all. I'd give it a 6.5/7 just for originality alone.

I watched VVitch last night, it was pretty alright, better than expected. I would suggest download a sub for it because the whole movie they talk in old english.
>>
>>70423493

I will get absolute shit for this but Jeepers Creepers.

Saw it out of sheer boredom and was really surprised, some of the imagery was really sinister and creepy, plus it was actually fun.
>>
>>70424783

> download a sub

At least americans now understand how I feel having to put on subtitles for a lot of US films. In the Witch they just talk like they're from Yorkshire.
>>
>>70424680
>Event horizon
People only recommend this for that jarring hell scene, right?
>>
I'm not sure I should, but I'll rec you Dead Mary. I really enjoyed it, but a lot of people didn't.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892047/

It's creepy, well shot (except for a bit at the end when it's a little too dark to see clearly), the story and characters are interesting (not exactly likable characters, but not hateable charicatures either), the relationships are believable, it's got a Evil Dead meets the Thing vibe to it. Basically Evil Dead+Paranoia with a possible apocalyse thrown in (or it just the demons messing with their heads).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwRBqi72D7A

The Dead mary/Bloody Mary stuff is just their version of reading the Necronomicon, there isn't an entity called Dead Mary. Or maybe there is. I loved the ambiguity and possibilities the movie brings up.

Don't expect too much and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I liked it better than the actual Evil Dead remake.
>>
>>70424804

Pretty much, I view it that some of the design teams were so good that they shone through even despite Anderson trying his fucking usual best to ruin it all. So i'd recommend the film to anyone with a caveat that taken as a whole its actually fucking awful.

>>
>>70425040
27 and still falling for bait.
>>
>>70424945

I think the praise isn't down to that - it's just a reaction to horror moving out of jump scares and chases. People might consider them over praised but hopefully it encourages more films of the sort in any case.
>>
>>70424976

1 - is there meant to be a better sequel?

The tv series is good though. It's short (12 episodes). But it's another adaptaion, it doesn't follow the tv movie.

Anyway, I read the book (I still have to read the sequels). It was really good, but not at all like any of the movies. There's no ghosts in the book.

I like that whole 'corner of the eye' thing that the film exploited to the nth degree. Yeah but that's framing it as if it's 'if you're easily scared by slashers you'll hate it, if you're an intellectual you'll like it' - in reality i dont like most horrors, but i found lake mungo to be bloated, badly paced and without any horror until the final second which was too little too late and with no coherency with the plot.

I just don't understand why it was so well reviewed though?
>>
>>70426369

Yeah i can get the corner of the eye thing and the acting was good considering the low budget. I guess like anything an atmosphere can't work for everyone and if it doesn't sit with someone none of the rest will even if done well.
>>
>>70426408

Eh, not really. Maybe I should have been more specific. Stupid shit like slashers don't scare her, but "spooky" movies generally do. I don't think I'm some intellect or anything, I just don't get scared easily. I just personally thought it was a pretty original take on the genre, with some cool turns along the way.
>>
>>70423493
In my humble opinion any horror that lives on the psychological thriller side of the spectrum and relies more on visual storytelling to set up foreboding and atmosphere will always be better horror films

But any good horror from any sub genre HAS to have a top tier score and sound design

Obviously this oa no good to you at the moment because it's not out yet, but I saw a trailer for a horrorey film about a few teenagers that break into a blind man's house. The blind guy turns out to be crazy and traps them inside, so they've got to creep around to escape before he finds them and murders them.
It looked way better than it sounds, but I really don't recommend watching the trailer if you have the slightest interest in it, because the trailer gives away what would be some really cool scenes to see for the first time in the theatre.
Anyway, anybody know the film I'm talking about? Thoughts?

Personally, I usually enjoy the early buildup of horror movies more than the later parts and I suspect a lot of people feel the same way. Lake Mungo is successful at creating an unsettling atmosphere without really going into the usual later stages of horror until the very end. I agree that the pacing feels a bit uneven at times, but it still kept me interested throughout.

>>
>>70426639

Cool, I'll definitely check it out.

>>70426669

I know what you mean. I've been in full summer camp slasher mode these past few weeks. Think I'm going to watch Sleepaway Camp or the Burning today.

adaptation of The Wendingo by Algernon Blackwood when?

also i want The Vaults of Yoh-Voombis by Clark Ashton Smith adapted

sucks to be a fan of the old school cosmic and creature horror when only shitty fantasy crap like GoT and Twilight gets greenlighted

Try Psycho, And Then There Were None (Agatha Christie basically invented the slasher genre with her book. Even the weird ironic gory kills are there), and Alice Sweet Alice.
>>
>>70426818

this has a good first half and initial plot but the possession thing is bit generic and mediocre

its still a good flick, the atmosphere is good
>>
>>70426803

Don't think creature horror is really in right now after a decade or two of being inundated with derivative, awful attempts at it.

We can hope for cosmic horror, maybe lovecraftian influence - but i suspect lots of horror is going to try going down the realism route of films like Lake Eden.
>>
>>70426845

I've read the book - i enjoyed it, dont recall it being a slasher though!

That scene was done well. Felt safe at first but then strangely vulnerable later on.

I think everyone has this fear of being caught out in the open like that.

That ending with Phone call from Wife.

Would you pick it up?

The tv show Dead of Summer might be to your taste. I think it starts next month.

>>70426803

There's a few Wendigo movies. Ravenous for example. But yeah I want an adaptation too.

>>70426816
The Fly with Vincent Price. The Goldblum one was a remake. That's what he's talking about.
>>
>>70426855
Yea, the possesion thing is average, but the hobos and the mirror/Satan thing makes up for it.
>>
>>70426925

when i first saw The Revenant i thought that holy shit with this visual style the Algernons Wendingo would be excellent

(the novel is about 4 moose hunters in canada in 1900-1910 encountering a wendingo)
>>
>>70426925

I'm cautiously optimistic for Dead of Summer. The idea sounds really cool, but it feels like it will be hard to pull it off and make it decent.

It's not old English you confounding pleb, it's period English. Everything is perfectly clear provided you're not a retard.

COOL

NOOOOOOOOOOO

I watched Scream Queens, it was pretty good because Glee Guy can make good first seasons, but I have no hope of the OUAT guys doing the same.
>>
>>70427036

>the Once Upon a Time guys

Pretty much sums up my feelings. I know they used to work on Lost too, although I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.
>>
>>70426889
It ticks every single slasher trope/cliché except for the masked killer thing.
>>
>/horror/
Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>70427088
Once season 1 was decent, even if the effects were shit. The writing was tight. Season 2 was the beginning of the end.

Maybe DoS will be good? I just hope it doesn't egt cancelled after a few episodes. I hate when shit like that happens. That's why I don't watch a season of a tv show before it's already over. I've been burned too many times.

I actually never watched Once Upon a Time, just wasn't really something that interested me. I agree though, although I feel like cable shows like this generally make it through the season regardless.

Surprisingly I've never heard of Harper's Island. Is it worth going back and watching?

I watched Signs yesterday. It was shit.
>>
>>70427268
Yes. It's a self-contained single season. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger. It's more of a mini-series than a regular series. It's good. Really good. Only 13 episodes. The series is played straight, there isn't much humor or self-awarness like in the Scream movies.
>>
>>70427268
>>70427440
and the characters are great. There's a lot of character development, you care about them. Someone dies (more than one sometimes) every episode.
>>
>>70427342

it has a good atmosphere and directing,i liked it eventhough the script is a bit weak

So whats the verdict on LifeForce(1985)

it has one of the best themes in existence, more suitable for some grand fantasy epic than some space vampire film

oliver harpers take on the trailer and the movie:

>>
>>70426925
Oh, I've only seen the goldblum one, I've heard the old one is quite goofy and I don't know how close the 80s one is to that. I know the 80s one is quite different from the short story
>>
>>70427539
>it has a good atmosphere and directing,i liked it eventhough the script is a bit weak
Home Alone's brother killed it for me
>>
>>70427578

the old one is good too,not too campy imo.

it is more of an drama movie than the cronenberg version,i like them both a lot

the older fly 2 is the campy one,the sequel to cronenbergs fly is gore porn, like watered down aliens with more gore

>people seem to have learnt that tension and dread are more important than slasher chases and jump scares.
lolno. that's basically in every horror movie. it's just that horror movies are cheap to produce and gain tons of money so people are eager to jump on the bandwagon

Can anyone explain to me the appeal of Scream Queens?
I tried watching it and found all the characters to be insufferable idiots. The killings were boring and too quick, the slasher wasn't scary... hell, 90% of the time, it felt more like a teen drama than a horror show.

And no one acted real. No one was afraid, or at least in any realistic sense, of there being a serial killer going around. I just don't get why I see it so popular on this board, but the Scream TV series or Slasher are never brought up.
>>
>>70427919
It's waifu shit.
>>
>>70427919

Scream Queens is a light-hearted horror comedy series, though.

I'm watching The VVitch right now. Up to where Caleb is lost in the woods and I think the dog just died.

That ugly granny witch nudity was scary

Best Emma's hairy arms and qt bitchface, Breastlin's tits, that's about it.
>>
>>70427978
That makes a lot of sense.
>>70427981
I will admit, it made me laugh in places, but I found it all too annoying. I might give it a second try
>>
>>70427919
SQ was a comedy-horror. Comedy first. It was good. Calling it horror, or serious, is missing the point. It's a goofy parody of slasher movies.

The Scream tv show was serious, but it wasn't very good. I enjoyed it, but the tv series Slasher is better when it comes to a more realistic take on the genre.

Also I thought True Detrctives S1 was a good horror offering but I chose to view it as love raftian cosmic horror instead of halicinations.
