Hahaha complete pleb. It gets across everything important and more. Sure I'm upset they cut stuff they filmed like the brain scene bc it was my fav but they did it to make a better movie and it works very well you're not making movies for a reason.

Things were always goinf to have to be cut. Lots of things in fact. And frankly it doesn't matter the entire point of filmmaking is its a different medium with different necessities and therefore artistic expression. Yes I think its underrated its very well paced tho and shot and made ill fight you. But I like 6 and 7 even moreso.

Even JK didn't take any faults with the adaptation she actually really liked the film and its evident yates was a very fine director since they wanted him for fantastic beasts. You could say JK was just saying it for the press but (it was going to make the same amount no matter what she said) she hadnt really praised the directing and the film in that manner before, save Cuaron. She said she honestly though ootp was the best yet. It was a much better film than Goblet of Fire
>>
>>70416582
I mean, it's impressive, but you should have stopped after They Live. Just because In the Mouth of Madness is a good movie doesn't mean that Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned remake, and Escape from LA aren't much lesser movies. Even Christine is really weak when compared to Halloween of The Thing.

Have you ever been to Reddit or had a conversation with a real person? It's literally nothing but Tarantino praise. When I was studying film at university our tutor called 'Pulp Fiction' the greatest cinematic achievement lmao. If it was just his opinion then fair enough but he was actually teaching that. Analyze film?
I think that that statement is derived exactly form the analysis of the film.
When analyzing his movies you will come out with fantastic cinematography, great camera angles, great and sometimes revolutionary use of technology, great stories, mostly great pacing and good actors and mostly good atmosphere.
The thing you can't analyze is the "substance", the feeling, the art, I never heard anyone shitting on him for anything that you can analyze, if they were they were bullshitting, the only critique I heard was of his lack of substance.
>>
>>70418104
pleb.
>>
>>70418915
I prefer the second half. Its not about his technical camera skills either. Its all substance for me. A great war film bc the satire and grim reality blend perfectly. How can you shoot women and children? Easy you don't just lead them as much. Top kek and feels to the max

That's not analysing the film. The film tries to tell you something and make you ultimately related and transcend with the film. That's the substance. That's what filmmakers aspire to do with their audience. The art doesn't just look good it provides thought. The shining is supposed to be horror this doesn't apply. His other films do

Not to me and a lot of people.
2001 was just boring, the second time, to me except for a few bits, nothing to relate to or transcend with apes, nor the rotating ship shots, that film could be a lot shorter to me and it would be better, Eyes wide shut was great to me when I first watched it but the second time was boring, Apocalypse now the same thing, I liked Strangelove.
I found that I liked his movies because everyone around me considers him a religion, later when I asked people what is so good in 2001 no one gave me a real answer.
>>
>>70419197
Pro tip that's because he's a big name so people who watch films will watch him.

Haha you didnt even get it. I mean im big into anthropology and physics so there's a lot for me to think about. pretty sure you didnt understand a crucial bit of why the ending is so creepy. It was everything a masterpiece of a space odyssey should be. It and eyes wide shut are 10/10
>>

I think that thinking is shit knowing.

That would be true if I wouldn't like the things I like for the reasons I like. Maybe what you say is true and all that music, movies, books etc, I value because of the "between the lines" stuff I gathered actually has nothing behind it and I'm just shallow, but maybe it's the opposite, maybe here's really nothing behind most of his movies. I can entertain the thought that I'm wrong, I just don't see anyone else doing it.

Well because he's great.

I go to a /tv/ thread about him and no one say anything, I read the posts, everyone posts pretty pictures and circlejerks how great he is without actually saying anything.
All other directors, movies there's great talk, but not him, he's just good, stop asking questions or you're a pleb.

Dr Strangelove: Unfunny garbage film. Americans might have laughed at the time as they were only allowed to see nice "safe" comedies like I love Lucy on TV and real gold like Chaplin had fallen out of favour because he was an "evil" socialist and no talking in movies didn't appeal to the plebeian tastes of American cinema goers. Dr Strangelove must have seemed like Elvis jumping on stage during a poetry recital to Americans, but viewed today without paying attention to its history, it is a pretty lame ham fisted film.

2001: the middle bit with HAL is ok and runs like a 7/10 episode of Star Trek. You wouldn't kick it out of bed for farting but it's just a standard "computers go crazy" technophobic plot that has been done so many times. A much better version of the same concept is West World. The 1st section with the monkeys and the monolith goes on far to long to remain interesting and the last section looks like self indulgent paff made to make the film longer in total on a tiny budget, and is like a kid playing with a kaleidoscope. It is not "profound" or "artistic" it is just filler, would Shakespeare have written crap like that in a play? I think not.

Clockwork Orange: Surprisingly an actually really good film. It asks complex morral questions of society and is beautifully shot. This is his masterpiece. It can't be faulted, which is probably the real reason why he had it banned until he was dead.

Barry Lyndon: fake historical yawn-fest.

The Shining: "Oh lets take a wonderful book and fuck it up, by changing shit for no reason." Said Kubrick. "I'll remember that for when I make Jurassic Park II." said his friend Spielberg.

Full Metal Jacket: The first half was OK and the film should have ended at the end of boot camp because nobody remembers what happened after that, I think they went off to fight in the Korean war or some shit, but I might be wrong.

I just watched Barry Lyndon for the first time yesterday... that movie is seriously the textbook example of "all flash, no substance".

The movie looks fucking BEAUTIFUL. Each scene is framed and colored and filmed to look like an old painting, and it's fucking wonderful. I have never seen a more beautiful looking movie.

But the plot itself is as one dimensional as it gets: Irish hick has an ego problem and tries to tricking his way up the social ladder, only to not fool anyone in the end and end up back where he started from (minus one leg and son). OOOOO big fucking deal. I accepted this during the first thirty minutes, thinking working up to some kind of build up or payoff... but... three hours later nothing. The only part that tugged at my heart strings in the least was the very last scene where his wife hesitated upon seeing the annuity request from Barry, knowing she will never get to see him again. But that's it.

A Clockwork Orange simply had more substance to it, and 2001 had the kind of visuals that encouraged you to let your mind drift and not worry about the plot. But Barry Lyndon had neither: it was a flat story with visuals you might not appreciate without paying attention to the plot.

So frankly, I'd give the movie a 6/10... with the visuals are a 9.5/10, but the story a 3/10. I really don't it's worth watching again, unless it's to see it for what it is visually and nothing more.

Is it a meme? I don't pay attention to reddit memes.

If you want me to choose another word, then it's nice looking. Like, I'm deliberately NOT using a fancy word to describe the fact that Barry Lyndon's visuals were top notch.

If you're saying that "Barry Lyndon is a great looking movie" is the meme... ...yeah ok? So what? It looks good, and that's all it has going for it.

...

>>70424606
And a good story. Maybe the whole "Irish hick tricks his way into good social standing, only to lose it all because he's still an Irish hick" concept was fresh in 197something, but forty years later it's pretty stale. It was really fucking boring, and that last duel with Barry and Lord Barrington was hardly the climatic scene that a major movie requires in its ending scenes.

Anyone calling this movie "Kubrick's best" are the same kind of people who use big words like "magnanimous" just to sound smarter than they actually are. Y'know, the same kind of one-dimensional hick who could relate to a character like Barry Lyndon.
>>
>>70417558
I would love that actually.
>>
>>70424701
Visually stunning is all that it is. I will admit that hands down. I'm damned impressed with how Kubrick was able to make that movie look as good as it did, and especially with candlelight only.

But there's a reason why Kubrick was the only person to not a win an award for that movie.
