Which films/series do you use as pleb filters, /tv/?

I imagine most of us have a particular piece that we use as a means to judge the intelligence and taste of new acquaintances or potential love interests.

Mine is The Thin Red Line, as in my experience it is typically mouthbreathing retards or beta nu-males who cannot grasp its attention to cinematography, nuanced pacing and deep artistic value.

Another red flag is those who favorably compare the poorly aged popcorn flick Saving Private Ryan to this timeless masterpiece.

What are your pleb filters, /tv/?
>>
>>70409821
Michael Mann's Miami Vice

If you don't like it, you don't understand film.
>>
>>70409855

I've only ever seen Heat and Collateral and I really enjoyed them, but why is Mann rated so highly by everyone on /tv/?
>>
>>70409821
BvS for the same reasons

Bressonian gestures

Mann films are the cinematographic equivalent of vaporwave. They all have this highly nuanced aesthetic that drips nostalgia and cool, while somehow completely avoiding the tropes that ruin the vast majority of similar genre films. Mann almost never phones in his films, he is a master of the genres he typically partakes in.
>>
>>70409937
eh heat 9/10, collateral 6/10, the insider 6/10
>>
>>70409937
He's a filmmaker's filmmaker.

>>70410142
did you just (positively) compare Mann to fkn vaporwave?

No, I compared the reasons people like Mann films to the reasons people like vaporwave.

But neither can you, pleb
>>
>>70409937
It's a meme, everyone knows he's a hack stuck with shitty digital cameras.
>>
>>70409937
He makes bang bang movies but he's not that popular
>>
>>70409821
Funny I also use The Thin Red Line, just the other way around.
>>
>>70409937
He understands cinema - sound, editing, cinematography, pacing.. everything.

He's not great with story and original characters. Almost all his crime films have the same female love interest and the same lead. But they're all pretty good regardless.

Watched Blackhat tonight for the first time. Not bad at all.

>>70409937
Because that ape saetre meme'd him into our heads

Same way the Texan hick related to Assad went to Harvard and Oxford and then threw a table against the wall for disagreeing with his professor on Heidegger.

The true Malick pleb filter is Knight of Cups
>>
Honestly, PTA films are a good test. If they can't even handle There Will Be Blood, they are hopelessly pleb. But if they can into The Master and especially Inherent Vice, we're cool.

Also, as Malick's name is itt thread a lot, I'll agree. I won't call someone a pleb for not connecting to his films, but anyone who writes him off as pretentious and fails to see his merit is a pleb. Knight of Cups is by far his most effective pleb filter.
>>
>>70410630
That he's pleb?
>>
>>70410538
Refn is only alright, but, and I love Malick, Carruth is amazing as well.

Disliking Refn is sign of being clueless and trying too hard.
PROTIP: Refn has made other movies than Drive and OGF.
>>
>>70410731
Kek, sorry, you must be pissed his last two movies went over your head
>>70411158
You're right, Valhalla Rising is fantastic. But Refn is in no way on the same level as Malick
>>
>>70411260
Have you seen his Danish films? Pusher II is arguably more emotionally accomplished than anything Terry (and I LOVE Terry) has ever done.
>>
>>70411354

>Pusher II is arguably more emotionally accomplished than anything Terry has ever done

Malick films have never been keenly focused on individual characters, they aren't slice of life films with a limited scope like the Pusher films.

While I do enjoy Refn, I don't think he's on Malick's level, he dabbles far too much in tropes and genre films to be considered a true auteur. I think he'll improve a lot with age, but I'm not sure his films from this decade will age very well.

Ayy.

I'm a long haul trucker who spends all day driving around the US and taking pictures of memorable scenery or wrenching on my rig, and then spends all night watching cinema. I wouldn't call myself a nu male in any sense.

or you could just accept that people you meet in life come with different interests, tastes, and intelligence types.

instead of you know, being insufferable.
>>
>>70412008

>Preferring Fight Club to Se7en

How are they even comparable? I greatly enjoy them both, they're entirely different films.
>>
>>70412091
Fuck off.
>>
>>70412091

Pleb filters have nothing to do with taste or interests, they have everything to do with cognitive abilities and intellect. They don't have to like a pleb filter, they just have to recognize that it has value as a piece of art. Liking it is just icing on the cake.
>>
>>70412091

thank you

Cinema is just the modern format of drama, with even more artistic merit since the perspective can be altered in a drastic manner while the stage will always be the stage.
>>
Any form of judgment, really. Unless it's just casual conversation or banter, taste is just a distraction. If we are seriously talking about movies or television I don't really care if you liked whatever we are talking about or not. That's not the point of the conversation. Sure, it's an okay side comment but I generally stop talking to people if all they can do is tell me what shit they like and don't like without any reasoning beyond the must mundane criticism like "boring," "not for me," "I don't watch serious stuff," "nothing happened," "stupid." Whatever dumb people say that just watch whatever the fuck is in front of them without ever thinking about why they are watching it or why someone made it.

Me too also The Witch is my poser filter

I use the following as my pleb filters:
