Film Industry Tips?

Graduating college with a film major
>impossible to find a job
>all my contacts work in radio or commercials

I'm Canadian but I have my dual citizenship. I thought this would be a pretty easy industry to get into being able to work in both Canada and US but so far so no luck. Any success stories and tips?

>>
Lol how are you graduating with no legit contacts?
What did you study and what do you plan on doing?
>>
>>70325010
I want to work on Documentaries & Music Videos
I quickly learned that there's no money in both of them and they are extremely hard to get into
>>
>>70325010
Oh sorry I also studied Media Broadcasting. Majoring in film. I know a lot of post-production editing more than anything else though
>>
What are you good at?
Writing? Shooting? Editing? Directing?
>>
>>70325194
>editing
There was a guy on /tv/ some time back who worked as an editor. He did porn movies eight hour a day. Sounded pretty sweet. Editing away guys sweaty assholes and coke girls freaking out.
I think he said the pay was pretty good.

My end goal is to edit music videos or docs but my program didn't have a co-op or internship or anything like that so I don't know where to go from here. I don't live far from Toronto and could commute but I think i'd rather work in Hollywood or NYC.
>>
Get an internship wherever you can and make like the jannies and to shit for free. Only way to build up a portfolio, and those are more important than the actual degree famalamadingdong

It is easy, if you're a cute little boy and you're willing to meet some producers and have some "sleepovers"
>>
>>70325428
Do* shit for free, I meant. I mean no one's going to pay you to shit either but that's now what I was trying to say.

On a side note, what are the chances that I'll break into better things if I'm a part of a film crew that makes it to sundance

ha ha what the FUCK anon

why are you such a fucking retard ha ha ha wow what the fuck

literally the only reason to go to film school is to make the right contacts, you basically failed film school
>>
>>70325582
Yeah, I have a job in radio now because I made so many friends in the industry it's just not where I want to be for the rest of my life.
>>
>>70325635
So go make shit dumb butt. Go find up-and-coming bands and make some of their music videos. You don't need contacts to start doing shit.
>>
I'm a small time actor on his way up. Knowing nothing about your end of things, Id say you should start working as a production assistant on sets (you may need to go to less competitive areas like DC, Richmomd, Atlanta, than LA or NY) and start meeting people there. Just be fucking professional and don't screw around cause they'll fire a pa without a second thought. That'll help you learn what a film set is actually like, other than that get some money together and figure out how to do some shorts if you're interested in making your own material. Not that hard to get a camera, and you can use websites to assemble a crew but you'll need money.

If your contacts aren't in the industry you want to work in then they're dogshit contacts.

So you don't have any experience?
Go do videos for bands, build your rep
If you can, most local news offer positions editing, get some experience and work on projects that will be noticed
Public tv and some unis are open for proposals on new shows, maybe you can do something with that with some mates from school

Build a portfolio like the other guy said

Don't so shit for free, ever. If they can't pay you and for whatever reason you still end up doing a gig for them, make sure they can repay the favor or don't forget you
>>
>>70325718
yo what there's a film scene in DC? How big? Like atlanta/rawling's big?
>>
>>70325718
Why you acting bro?
And what are your goals?
I'm curious

>Build a portfolio
So much this.
Make music videos for new, young bands. Invest some time into that. Don't think of it as you're helping them, you're doing it for yourself. They won't have a lot of cash, but make a deal of some sort, that they'll use you in the future etc.
A couple of music videos and you'll be the next Spielberg.
Good luck anon

The studio wanted to use Canadian film crews to film Transformers to cut costs since they were cheaper. After meeting with them Bay noted their lack of experience and competence and took a 4 million dollar pay cut to use American film crews.
