Patroclus was actually older than Achilles in the Iliad. Patroclus was a more masculine, bearded man while Achilles was a beautiful clean shaven man who had somewhat of an androgynous quality to him. Achilles liked to have Patroclus give him his attention and contemplate upon him while he played his lyre or whatever other activity he was doing. He liked having Patroclus witness the perfection of his form.

Patroclus and Achillies were bros, not lovers. Homosexuality as a sexual orientation as we conceive it now didn't exist back then; it fell along lines of submission and dominance. Also, there is evidence to suggest that the average Greek commoner who wasn't part of the intelligentsia often held practices of pederasty in contempt, resentment and sometimes even disgust.
