American Dad" feels like one of those tolerable side projects from famous musicians. It feels similar, so you like it, but ultimately, it's too watered-down to ever be as good as the original.

I'm not sure Family Guy was every really that good to begin with or whether I simply grew out of that style of television series. The first handful of servicable seasons haven't aged particularly well so it's difficult to tell.
In my opinion even when American Dad was trying to decide exactly what type of series it was trying to be and more reliant on political humor it was superior to, perhaps, "peak" Family Guy.
Now there's simply no comparison, standardization of the 'core' three characters in Family Guy has made it an entirely different, and much worse show.
It's most apparent on the Cleveland Show, of all things, when we get glimpses in the form of cameos of modern Peter Griffin who is a complete mess and it's made more apparent when he's isolated from his Quahog friends and family. If anything most plots on Family Guy would improve if Peter wasn't involved in some way but even in Brian or Stewie episodes as a result of being, I assume, the titular character he and his style of humor is sort of ham fisted in there regardless of whether or not it's an actual detriment to the overall quality of the episode.
The only thing really enjoyable to me about these last few Family Guy seasons has been the developing dynamic between Brian, who's become insufferable but in a good way, and Quagmire. Besides that there's really nothing there worth watching.
American Dad seems to have gotten better, if anything, after coming to TBS.

After coming to TBS, the actual plots and characterization became even better. But when Mike Barker left, you can tell the comedy suffered, particularly the delivery. Gone is the snappy joke rhythm and the jokes that ends the scenes can be pretty terrible.
You can really see Matt Weitzman struggle on the first season the show had Mike Barker. Season 12 was so uneven, with scripts that would have been a 1st draft in Peak American Dad.
Season 13 is better, but with less episodes. Perhaps fewer episode counts are necessary now.

Its pretty crazy to see how it started off as spoofs of a crazy conservative, hippie girl, nerdy son and ends up really finding it's own ground with their characters driving the jokes and stories instead of relying on references or situations with them being caricatures
