Eh, I think they're both about equal. Buffy is funnier and comfier while Angel is more thrilling and has deeper lore, Buffy has better standalone episodes while Angel has better arcs. They each have their strengths

Every year the studio waited a long time before deciding to renewing the show. The rest of the cast and crew would have to reject offers for other projects while waiting to find out. Since their ratings were up (and considering how the show was cheaper to make now since the budget for Season 5 had already been slashed in half) he said he wanted a decision when the rest of the shows got theirs and that it wasn't fair to the cast and crew to make them wait. Angel was more consistent, Buffy had like 4 good seasons (1,2,3,5) the rest is either mediocre or irredeamable shit. I basically had to force myself to finish the last season of Buffy. It's dissapointing that the 5th season went back to the monster of the week formula but the finale was excellent, it also made me cry like a bitch.

I honestly love how Joss treated the teams on both shows. When you're younger it's a lot easier to meet and bond with people. When you're older it doesn't always happen so quick. It's also just how the shows are. Buffy is about the problems that come from growing up, and in the later seasons about someone young dealing with adult problems for the first time. Angel is a show about adults dealing with grown-up (and supernatural) problems.

One of the things people tend to overlook with Joss is his ability to spot and groom talent. Writers joined Buffy and Angel and left as producers and showrunners. Bell, DeKnight, Greenberg, Goddard, Minear, Fury, Espenson, Noxon, and more have all praised him pulling them out of the writer's room and giving them more opportunities to direct and produce, actively encouraging them to be on set and to just be more involved. The only other show that comes close to spawning as much high level-talent was The X-Files.
Also, Joss didn't leave Angel as alone as some people think. Everyone who worked on Angel has said that he was usually way more involved with the show than he ever gave himself credit for. It's also pretty well known that he typically wrote the major character moments in various episodes (for both shows) without being credited for it.

Fray was amazing. I don't think the Buffy comics are that bad, most of Season 8 is terrific (up until Wolves at the Gate), but it does go off the rails a bit after that. Joss even admits that they all went a bit overboard on it. Season 10 was pretty solid though and Angel and Faith has been good.

One of the reason's I want a Buffy game is because the world really lends itself to some great game design. You've got some really clear character archetypes and class designs that allows for a lot of fun and variety. Plus if you add the option to play as a Vampire it would add some cool mechanics involving sunlight.

It's an episode that confused the hell out of me on a rewatch. I didn't see Angel in order my first time through, so when I got to that part on my proper rewatch I thought I knew what was going to happen already but the episode just kept throwing me off.
Buffy was more iconic, more heroic and try to build a world so it's more difficult. SMG and the Buffy cast were actually really good and dialogs were great compare to shows of that time. I mean, can you imagine an episode of Charmed with a character making a joke about "Waiting for Godeau" ?
Angel is easier to make, Whedon had more space to do what he likes, less to say and more to show. So he could try fun stuff, create characters to play with and developp freely. Also there's the experience from Buffy. It's no wonder the S5 is the best show Whedon ever made. But please remember S1 was unappealing and S4 a huge mess.
I don't know many shows where the last season is the strongest though.

Whedon's ability to learn from his mistakes quickly and course correct was impressive. One of the things that hurt Angel's first season was that their initial approach to it was flawed. It was created to be more of an anthology series where a lot of the dramatic narrative came from the people they were helping, but Joss realized it wasn't as effective as they wanted it to be (part of which could be due to the studio not letting them go as serious and dark as planned, especially the stuff they had to change in the first two episodes) and that Angel Investigations was just much more interesting. That's why there's a restructuring later in the season and it really improves in a big way after that.

Dark Willow was great, and I kind of enjoyed the Trio better than Glory. Even if you didn't, S6 didn't dwell on the Trio too much like S5 did Glory, so there were more fun, re-watchable, standalone episodes in S6. Including the most rewatchable episode ever possible.

The only flaw with the fourt season finale is that it really doesn't make any sense for several of the cast members to join Wolfram. I mean, Wesley spent an entire season being courted by them and ended up with a no. But i guess it was what the show needed.

I'd say it's more than a contender, it has the highest quantity of great episodes and only one bad one, Dead Man's Party. It's almost perfect, the only Buffy season I can say that about with a straight face

I think it does make sense when you look at the timing. At that point they were just worn out, sick and tired and ready for a change, no doubt the Senior Partners saw this and swooped down as soon as the fruit was ripe for the picking.

Seriously bugged me when Xander had a moment where he gloated in the last season that he stopped Dark Willow with a speech. There's a number of things the character's done that bothered me but to see him do something like that so near the end of the show was a little upsetting.

I don't know... she was really fucking well-written. Gave her a nice send-off with Wesley trying to find and burn her contract at least. Maybe the writers figured he'd never fully commit to chasing Fred if Lilah was always available. Even when they were butting heads they had great dialogue

It's supposed to be a surgical thing that removes anything connected with Connor, but we see that the wizard who did the job was a bit of a sadist so who knows. It definitely seems to have wiped out the relationship between Fred and Wesley, they look like they might finally be in a place where they'll eventually get together, and then the next season opens with Fred whoring it with knox and Wesley suppressing himself.
