>Gandalf/Eomer driving into the uruk's flank
>Faramir's doomed assault on Osgiliath while Pippin sings
>Gandalf riding out alone to drive off the Nazgul as the soldiers flee for Minas Tirith
>"Gondor calls for aid!" "...and Rohan will answer."
>last charge of the Rohirrim at Minas Tirith
>turning, reforming the line, and meeting the mumakil head-on

It wasn't his fault. After Del Toro left and he came onto the project, he basically had 6 months of pre-production compared to 3 years for the LOTR trilogy
Everyone in this thread should watch this.

>>70194998
Jackson had no desire to make the movies, but I think he stepped in when Del Toro left because he knew anyone else would completely destroy it. As such, we got a half-decent first film, a mostly forgettable second, and an absolute abortion for the third. I believe Jackson wanted to make it a two parter, but of course the studio wanted a trilogy.
>>70195317
Watched it - wasn't blaming the fat kiwi turd, was blaming the studio. But, at the end of the day, he took on the responsibility and he fumbled it by churning out garbage instead of standing up to the execs.
Plus weta was just resting on their laurels - King Kong showed them already losing creative steam.
>>70195457
To be honest, I'm glad he did what he did. There are 10/10 fan edits out there because he shot so much. If you trim the extended editions down, you can certainly get a great 4 hour hobbit film out of it.

>The studios wanted a "final battle" for Aragorn and Peter fought them on it.
I don't think that was the studio. But Jackson did end up realizing what a stupid idea it was and that it turned Aragorn's suicidal sacrifice to buy Frodo some time into a 1v1 fight with the final boss.

I'd love to see a good edit. I watched all three in theatres, but I was quite disappointed and didn't bother buying the extended versions.
Anyone else still have this?
I don't even like the Hobbit movies that much, but I'd love to buy a blu ray set of all six Hobbit/LotR extended editions, if the packaging was like that.

There will never be another fantasy epic as great as LOTR ever.
Any future script will have been poisoned by political correctness. They will never be able to pull together a cast that is as dedicated to the material as this one.

>>70197595
Fellowship is one of the comfiest movies ever made. It's easily the best of the three. The entire Mines of Moria sequence is one of the greatest ever filmed, in my opinion. Fuck man, that movie's got it all.
>>70197511
It was the perfect storm, anon. A top to bottom unreal cast, flawless book to screenplay adaptation, costume and set designers that obviously knew and cherished the source material, shooting the closest thing to "on location in middle-earth" as possible, and of course, a director insane and ambitious enough to pull it all together.
The perfect storm - and we got to watch it play out on the big screen. This must be how greybeards feel about getting to watch the original Star Wars trilogy as kids.
I'm going to post a few LOTR images
>>70197799
No idea what edits are worth my time. All I know is that I watched the extended and I easily saw potential in something amazing.

A reminder that Tolkien was BTFO by based fatman
>Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?
>>70198613
>implying George Lucas didn't kill it himself and Disney revived the franchise
Am I speaking to someone from some twisted parallel reality?
>>70198812

Aragorn wasn't just morally good, he was wise but also savvy, powerful, and had the authority required to rule. These kinds of rulers do pop up from time to time, even in real life see: Charlemagne. Tolkien never implies that Aragorn's rule is without bumps along the way.
Best race? Best race.

I really liked Force Awakens, but I think part of it is because I had the prequels coming out while I grew up. FA tried a little too hard to be A New Hope, but I think episode 8 will take things in a fresh direction.
Lord of the Rings was more than just the movies to me, though. My dad got me into the books as a kid, and we went to see all three movies together multiple times, so it's a mix of good movies and good memories.

I'd say Tolkien was anti-industrialist but it doesn't really apply to his books. He was more nostalgic for older times more than anything. I'm pretty sure anyone that was in WW1 came out at least somewhat anti-industrialist.
Another great part of this trilogy in my opinion is the love story between Aragorn and Arwen.

>"I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing."

It's not medieval, it's mythic, larger than life situations that people like GRRM's characters would only know from legends. Also, I don't think he knows much about orc creations, as it's pretty vague to begin with but I'm fairly sure they don't have babies in a traditional manner.
>>70199643
He wrote himself into like ten corners and has openly admitted he really just had no idea for a long time before he made any real progress in the writing.
>>70207221
>it's pretty vague to begin with but I'm fairly sure they don't have babies in a traditional manner.
Tolkien went back and forth on this but later on he wrote to a fan who asked that there "must have been" female Orcs. I think this is around the time he started to struggle with the implications of a race being universally evil as well.
It's amazing to me how forgotten the Hobbit movies are, and they aren't even old yet. They were so poorly done, so fucking forgettable it's hard to believe the same man is responsible for the creation of both. The fact that is parallels Star Wars so closely is just scary.
Similar things can be said about the Hobbit and the prequels, only there are actually many positive things you can make out form the shit that is the prequels, not so much with the Hobbit films.
I mean maybe the first Hobbit film was a 6/10 movie, but the others were just abysmal save a few decent scenes.
The LotR trilogy will stand the test of time as one of the greatest trilogies ever made. The Hobbit films will be forgotten (and already have been) to the point where no one will ever discuss of have nostalgia for them.
