does it hurt being this retarded?
>>70155656
Real talk, there's no way the village survived for long afterwards. The skraelings were outbreeding them exponentially.
How many of the vikings even had names?
>>70156195
Crichton's ashes don't need you to defend them, in any case he's responsible for both book and film.
>>70155656
>positive portrayal of religious faith
>positive portrayal of realistic, honor-based manliness
>Unique as fuck settings/villains (seriously pre-Aryan Earth mother worshipping cannibal magician tribes? Autistic as fuck and very good)
>based on dank real historical documents (Arab accounts of going on trips with Vikings)
also look at my ebin numbetrs XD :D
That's what went right

I LISTENED
>>70156345
this 100%
>all characters are deeply religious.
>at NO POINT does this take over the plot or result in any bullshit

They triggered critics who didn't want a fair portrayal of the clash between the islamic golden age and viking culture, each with their own virtues.
Hollywood wanted the usual cliches, the vikings portrayed as being racists who eventually getting BTFO, some out of place mary sue constantly breaking the immersion like jar jar binks, basically the same tropes in a different setting. Instead they relied on their own creativity, the power struggle among the vikings, the scene where Ahmad learns their language just by listening to them talk where they start to use more and more english words, all this was done very well. Hollywood doesn't like competition so they went into damage control and bribed critics.

evil viking shitlords colonized those poor POC tribesmen, the original scandinavians
>Ulfric stormcloak was in this
>Everytime they talk about 'curved swords' in skyrim I think about this movie
>>70156672
He never learned their language in the book.
>>70157055
Yeah but that would have made for a shitty movie.tbch the way they handled it was ouatanding
>>70157160
Oh I know, I don't mind it, I was just making a note of it.
It's surprising how it was a decent book when I never really expected anything good.
Much more raw than the film, less PG.
>>70157225
is there any dialogue at all after he goes north?
How does the book handle incompatible languages?
>>70157277
IIRC, he talks with the blonde fellow the whole time in Greek and uses him for a translator, though there are times when they don't have the time to translate shit or the translator ignores him.
>>70155656
pretty much everything. It's not a bad movie, at all. Casting is meh, but still awesome. Besides, the story, and the action are what made this movie really good. That, and the cgi that they were stuck with, back in the day.
>dat first full on attack with the fireworm
>>70157889
This is NOT a "meh" cast.
They look like they could beat up the cast of Conan 1982 unless jej gets magic powers
>>70157342
I think it was Latin
Also that based Blackfish actor.
