They're supposed to be Gondor's elite infantry but they are simple pike units to counter cavalry in bfme

Ask /tg/. They probably have the LoTE pdfs with the unit stats for both regular minas tirith infantry and the tree guard.
Because fuck you, they're not part of the story.
Also, they're probably senior knights who have seen enough battles in their lives and can't keep up with the younger ones anymore, so they're given this semi-retirement position of guarding the tree. That, or it's a punishment detail.

well can't say anything about that because it's like 10 years since I played it longer than a match against the ai. back in the good time it was enough to spam uruk pikes, upgrade and "pikes down" and just overrun the enemy. good times ;_;
