Here's to (You)

Which female companion has had the most work outside of DW and had a good career?

suggestions - Jean Marsh. Bonnie Langford (ironically) Karen Gillan lucked into a massive Hollywood movie and is doing a sequel.

any others?
>>
>>70093531
>Bonnie Langford (ironically)
What are you implying anon? Mel was a fantastic character because she was mundane and boring.
>>
>>70093596
What is your question anon?
>>
>>70093531
I heard Freema was in the new Starshit.
>>
>>70093531
Louise Jameson did alright
>>
RTD was on the One Show promoting Midsummer Night's Dream

They played his Playschool clip. I've been searching ages for that.
>>
>>70093672
if she is it's not in her wiki
>>
>>70093689
better than most I will agree on that. She is a proper actor and does a lot of stage plays.
>>
>>70093672
she was basically an extra
she was on the screen for like 1 second

>>70093719
>his Playschool clip
His what?
>>
>>70093531
Didn't Catherine Tate have a good career even before getting into Doctor Who?
If noncanon ones count, Sheridan Smith. Nicola Walker, too.
>>
>>70093719
Does he have his big arse cumming through the round window? OOOH!
>>
>>70093783
I forgot about Tate. She had her comedy career that is true. Not so much since Who though.
>>
>>70093531
all of the newer ones have had steady work
>>
>>70093226
>Capaldi brought a girl to life and then left her to live and watch everyone she knew die for an eternity because he wanted to stop being guilty and fix his ego
>he sees the results of his work and then leaves her again when she asks to travel with him
>>
>>70093827
I note your careful use of words anon
yes they have had more work than many other companions of the past. So far.

How Freema gets work is a mystery.
>>
>>70093399
Filtered too :^)
>>
>>70093689
True. Bergerac. Tenko and Adrian Mole were huge in the 80s. Then a big part in Eastenders, and the BF audios. Am sure she will enjoy a comfy retirement.

>>
>>70094077
Oh, you finally finished Pertwee.
What are some good Third Doctor books? They all seem a bit meh to me from what I can see online. Maybe it's just that I'm not a huge fan of the UNIT era.
>>
>>70093392
None, he just is her boyfriend.
>>
>>70094266
A hotter sister makes the lead more relatable.
>>
>>70094266
why does emilia always make that face with her eyebrows
>>
>>70093916
That was so fucking shit, yeah. And removing that scene would have made Love and Monsters pretty decent. But like >>70093988 said, she was at least already dead.

>>70093988
Nigga, Tennant should have left the second he realised what was going on. We actually have a thing in my family where we talk about how each new Doctor would have reacted.

11 would have left in the first 5 minutes. Series 8 12 would have probably told them they had to die so they stop trying to escape and Series 9 12 would have done the same as 10 because his personality shifted hard between seasons.

>>70093940
It was just a shitty arc. What I hate the most about those Ashildir episodes is how they all seem to exist only for the last few minutes. Like, all of Girl Who Died seems to only exist to put an alien chip in the Doctor's hands while in the past.
>>
>>70094279
I found that there weren't too many stellar ones, but my opinion that the best of the lot were The Harvest of Time, Dancing the Code and Face of the Enemy.

Face was a bit of an outlier though, barely featuring the doctor and all that.
>>
>>70094065
Read the book several yrs ago, and I've watched the film. Cannot believe how a GOAT book can result in such a below average film.

The 2 leads were miscast, and HUGE parts of the moral questions in the book are missed out of the film.
>>
>>70094556
Was Jenna good in it?
>>
>>70094584
Yea, but she was ideal for that particular role and well cast.

I've never met a woman that wasn't a little bit bi-curious. Especially when it comes to other "gorgeous" women. I was heartbroken in my early 20s, suicidal etc, I look back on that relationship now as some trivial frivolity and laugh about why I was so hung up. I'm sure she's got over it and probably bettered herself for it. You made the right decision for you, I wouldn't regret that.

Moff wrote Listen. And the part of Zygon Inversion that every1 remembers was written by Moff too.
>>
>>70103881
Moff didn't rule out co-writes for series 10, so that's a moot point.
>>70103873
Was the 4th episode, still left a gap of 6 consecutive non-Moff eps in the middle.
>>
>>70104138
Also if anything the co-writing lark is just a more transparent version of what has always been going on in NuWho since RTD, chances are Moffat did a bunch of rewriting and filling in sections on episodes you would never have credited to him.

It does in England. There's no Hollywood to graduate to, so it's either the stage or panel shows, maybe both in a lot of cases.
>>
>>70105352
practically anybody can call themselves a "stage actor" in England.

did he have any notable performances?
>>

>>70103820

>>
>>70105490
I don't know, I haven't seen any stage plays except Manic Street Preachers on their Send Away the Tigers tour.

Not every stage actor makes headlines anon. But through doing it they gain a good grounding and they get to know people in TV. That's my guess anyway.

I couldn't call myself a stage actor, and I've likely been on stage more times than you, for example. Not every musician is played on the radio either.

>>
>>70094044
Ok but not sure what any of that has to do with the original point I think was being made. Being a so called "stage actor" doesn't denote quality acting abilities. Pic related is a stage actor. inb4 /pol/ The guy was just a standout example of bad acting in Doctor Who
>>
>>70105490
>did he have any notable performances?
Sam you mean? Seems like the only one Wikipedia worthy is the original production & tour of The History Boys (plus the film adaptation), that's a pretty beloved play by Alan Bennett. Doesn't seem to be much outside of that though.
>>
In stage acting, you need to exaggerate your facial expressions and whatnot so that the people in the cheap seats can fully understand what you're trying to convey. This is why, particularly in Classic Who, some performances seem a bit camp and over the top, and "stage actors" stand out from "telly actors"
>>
>>70106291
>In stage acting, you need to exaggerate your facial expressions and whatnot so that the people in the cheap seats can fully understand what you're trying to convey. This is why, particularly in Classic Who, some performances seem a bit camp and over the top
Isn't that a bit of a weird generalisation to make? Having a stage career doesn't mean you are locked into camp and over the top acting, quite a few of the most respected Brit screen actors were/are prolific in theatre.
If anything Doctor Who gets more theatrical performances because it's a theatrical sort of show, with wild costumes, melodramatic baddies and monsters, weird settings and alien attacks, it's not the kind of series where a muted and naturalistic performance is necessarily called for.
>>
>>70106479
I'm not calling stage actors shit or anything, I'm just saying that generally you need to go that little bit further to make the people at the back of the theater able to see what you're doing. Somebody who's only ever acted on stage might default to this style on their first tv gig. This was mentioned in one of the mini documentaries on a Pertwee episode
>>
>>70106291
that's like the opposite of danny pink's wooden acting tho
>>
The hammy acting in Horns of Nimon is what makes it worth watching.
>>
>>70106721
I liked Sam's acting, I felt his character was a little bit anxious and reserved, and sort of tip-toeing along trying not to fuck things up with Clara.

A lot of people here seem to dislike him though. I kind of understand why you might call him wooden
>>
>>70107036
imo his character ultimately didn't pan out but had potential in the first few episodes he appeared

sam seems nice but his acting didn't help matters
>>
>>70107172
He wasn't in the show for very long and really only seemed to exist to give Clara a reason to snap and abandon her life on Earth, as well as to contrast the grandeur of travelling in time and space vs living out a normal life i guess

He could have been given more development but there wasn't really a lot of space for him, since the show is Clara Who not Danny Who
>>
>>70107036
I think the awkwardness was fine, but the problems came when he needed to show a backbone of actual charisma and it didn't quite materialise in his line readings. It felt like a floppy performance where, for example, Arthur Darvill's was always pretty clear and sharply defined.
>>
>>70107435
Danny's character arc in the finale deserved to be a masterpiece. A PTSD veteran who is reunited in the afterlife with the kid he killed, but as a result is spurred not to succumb to depression and delete his emotions? As a result he enters a living hell as a conscious corpse in a Cyber package and has to beg to have his emotions removed, but even as a soulless shell he still hangs on to his basic principles and sacrifices himself? Then giving up his chance to come back for the sake of redeeming his crime?
Imagine how that would have gone down if people really loved Danny from the get-go. People would be screaming GOAT from the heavens. The soldier speech would be something fondly remembered rather than awkwardly ignored. It would at least have gotten as warm a response as Rory's emotional excursion into Autondom at the end of series 5.
>>
>>70107435
I think that's why he really fails. He's such an obvious plot device that I couldn't give a fuck about him. His reactions were all over the place too. One minute he's extremely concerned about the Doctor's influence on Clara, to the point of threatening to breakup if she doesn't let him help her, yet the next episode he has a non reaction to the exact damned thing he feared actually happening in Kill the Moon, he just smiles and gives her an inspirational quote for the situation. It was totally incongruous with his previous attitude.

>>70107733
I think the issue here is there wasn't solid enough groundwork laid for the character as opposed to Rory. Moffat came up with the idea that Clara's boyfriend was going to die in the finale (Coleman says Moffat told her Danny was gonna die before they'd finished filming Listen) and he didn't seem to put much effort in how he got there.
>>
>>70107733
I liked it desu. I felt most of the emotions I was supposed to feel. But I felt them more through Clara or The Doctor than through Danny, desu.

This may be one area in which Chinball's "writer's room" style might improve things.
I mean, if Moffat wrote every episode in a series, he could set everything up and give everything as much as time as he felt was needed in order to give the best payoff etc. But with the current style, Moff only has four or five scripts in which to not only set an adventure and develop the characters of the doctor and his companion, but also any other side characters. He would have to take time out of other peoples scripts in order to shoehorn in development/setup.

If the main writer has input into every script right from the get-go straight up to production, perhaps setups and development can be more natural and rewarding.
>>
>>70108009
>One minute he's extremely concerned about the Doctor's influence on Clara, to the point of threatening to breakup if she doesn't let him help her, yet the next episode he has a non reaction to the exact damned thing he feared actually happening

I think the problem here might be the freelance-writers who very much work independently from each other. Going by Moffat's co-writing credits you can very much tell which episodes he put a lot of focus on and which not. That's why i'm cautiously optimistic about Chibnall's writer's room approach in the hopes that in the future things are going to be more unified so to speak.
>>
>>70108009
>It was totally incongruous with his previous attitude.
I don't see how. He wanted her to tell him about things and let him help especially if 'it' happened. It happened, she told him everything and came for emotional support/hugs.
>>
>>70108280
>Chibnall's writer's room approach
Is that confirmed yet? I'm very interested to see how it works out. At the least it should make his era feel even more distinct. How is Broadchurch written?
>>
>>70108020
>But I felt them more through Clara or The Doctor than through Danny, desu.
That's because Sam sucked desu ne. A charismatic performance would have carried even weak characterisation, god knows it's done so more than enough times in the past on Doctor Who.
>>
>>70103756
I would like to retract this post, as upon actually revisiting the DWM page, I realise the joke I refer to isn't being made. It would seem Moffat really is writing the final three episodes. That's different.
He does add 'Four, and whatever else I have to do, as ever." which implies it will probably be the same co-writing situation as the last two years.
>>
>>70108360
His girlfriend tells him that this alien guy he distrusts and dislikes left her and one of her students stranded on the moon while an armed nuclear device was primed and ready to detonate in order to force her to choose an outcome that will decide the fate of the Earth. His reaction to this news is to smile knowingly and tell her she needs to think it over before saying she's through with the Doctor. That is completely at odds with his reaction in the previous episode where he's flipping out and calling the Doctor a general and warning her that he's a bad influence who will push her to do things she will regret. It's also nonsensical for him to not even be a little upset or perturbed that something that insane happened to her.
>>
>>70108853
People act differently around different people. He was obviously trying to assert dominance over The Doctor and give him a warning. But, alone with Clara, he is much more caring and understanding. He realises how important the doctor is to her, and so tells her not to be so hasty in her decision making.

People can change their minds or become more lenient and it isn't necessarily "incongruous with their previous attitude"
>>
>>70109004
People also aren't robots and tend to have emotional reactions, especially when someone they care about has been harmed, or when something they are particularly sensitive about happens, such as this issue between Clara and the Doctor reminding him of his 'bad day' killing a kid in the army. His reaction would have been suitable & believable if she had told him she'd had a nasty argument with a co worker, but not for the events that had just taken place in Kill the Moon. It's incongruous because the previous episode set this up as a major conflict and he reacted as a character with actual character motivations in it rather than a bland motivational poster.
>>
>>70109004
>He was obviously trying to assert dominance over The Doctor and give him a warning.
the Doctor wasn't around when he gave Clala the ultimatum in told her he was like the guys he served under in the army, they were alone in her apartment
>>
I talked to a guy once who said they shouldn't have casted Capaldi because he's too old. I mentioned the other older actors who played the Doctor and he said that was okay before but now the Doctor is supposed to be getting younger with each incarnation

This dude was convinced his theory was actually canon and that it was ruined by Capaldi who "forced his way into the show" because he was a celebrity fanboy

He was like an autistic casual that hadn't seen any Classic Who and only watched Capaldi's first 4 eps but he was convinced he was right
>>
>>70110726
>This dude was convinced his theory was actually canon and that it was ruined by Capaldi who "forced his way into the show" because he was a celebrity fanboy
Did you ask him to support this claim with any evidence? Did he have some sort of mental breakdown?
>>
>>70108446
>Is that confirmed yet?
No.
>>
I think people would care about Danny more if Sam's acting was more charismatic. It felt like he just learned his lines every scene desu. Mickey wasn't that great writing wise imo but you see people like him because of Noel Clarke and stuff.
>>
>>70110986
Yes when I asked him to back it up he said it was obvious if you were paying attention and that it was a side effect of the Time War

He was the type of person that barely stops talking and ignores most questions unless you repeat yourself over and over. I got bored of trying to get sense out of him
>>
>>70110726
I knew someone that thought if you rewatched the classic who episodes showed in Name Of The Doctor you would see Clara. I thought he meant like they were going to insert in with cgi or something but he literally thought that she was always there. I tried to explain that the show has had many different writers and they all usually make stuff up as they go along and it would be impossible to build something up that long but he wasn't getting it and said he was going to watch them to "prove it". I just felt bad for him. How can you be that dumb?
