basically the only strengths of the show are that the directing is solid and Odenkirk is funny

Likely someone that works for Fring. From my understanding, Gus relied on Tuco's connections for distribution of his product. I assue Gus had the foresight to prevent Tuco's death for business reasons and to use Tuco's loose cannon behavior as a catalyst to convince the cartel to let Gus produce and distribute on his own, even though we know that didn't turn out well for the cartel.
We're going to see Gus use Mike to 'take care' of lower operation meth lab upstarts, because true competition doesn't appear until Walter's arc.

I watched and enjoyed both seasons.
It's prettty good - the Breaking Bad cameos are the worst parts. They feel very forced.
I would recommend downloading the show and watching it in a few long sittings. The plot moves at a glacial pace and I can see how it would be frustrating waiting a whole week just to have nothing significant happen for 45 mins.
