2001 is completely straightforward in regards to the story itself, the philosophy is what people dwell on.

Coherency is far too accessible, and appeals to the masses. This is a detriment to film, and art as a whole. Just look at the perpetual tripe being celebrated day in and out by, such as capeshit, GoT, etc.

>Basically everything Tarkovsky has touched blows out Battleship Potemkin's asshole.
You're conflating too many things here. And it's one of the reasons why these questions are dumb to begin with. Eisenstein is responsible for laying a lot of fundamental groundwork in the medium and conditioning the minds of artists who went on to use it. So any modern comparison will fall short to what he managed to technically achieve, as that technical achievement has gone on to inform all later works to some degree. So how can we measure these things fairly? In the end it's a fool's errand.
It's like saying Rembrandt blows Piero della Francesca out of the water. It makes no sense.
>>70072660
Obviously I disagree as pic related is my inclusion to the thread, and while I'll agree that To The Wonder was a bit weaker in comparison to The Thin Red Line and before, Knight of Cups was phenomenal

>>70072839
Evolution doesn't necessarily benefit the organism, and certainly not the majority outside of its direct influence, and so isn't an outright benefit. Take, say, some species of cave amphibian that have lost all vision: from our point of view, vision is important and losing it a detriment to life. So really, the stupid amphibian should have gotten itself outside of that cave before the lack of stimuli caused its vision to regress; now, it's stuck forever blind, living in a slimy underground cave. That's what Malick is, he's slowly going blind, and at his old age there's no turning back if not now.

A film can be judged on its technical elements without referencing its influence.
That being said, you are fucking retarded if you think that personal choice won't always play a role in a person's selection of the best film of all time. It's a completely subjective title.
>>70073371
This one is way up there, but 2001 is still better.

No, you're the pretentious dipshit if you're gonna tell me that battleship potemkin is better than zerkalo, or even 2001.

>the Beatles are artistic achievements.
Holy shit when will everyone stop sucking the Beatles dicks so hard? Brian Wilson had more talent than all of the Beatles combines.
>>70063545
People will always crap on it for simplicity in the themes/narrative, but it will always be one of my absolute favorites. The acting is great, and it creates a mood that flows through all the sets and characters to an extent I've never seen in another movie. I just find that the entire world comes together so nicely. In every new set after the first scene, I find myself simultaneously being blown away by how interesting it is and completely expecting it, aka every visual aspect just 'makes sense'.
>>70073422
You're hopelessly stupid. Both are different categories and influence shouldn't be a factor in assessing the quality of the films themselves.
But, sure, anything out of your league is 'pseudo'.
>>70073485
a band doesn't need talent to be enjoyable, people like their style
plenty of talented musicians are horrible creators
>>70073375
>A film can be judged on its technical elements without referencing its influence
Which indirectly brings up influence. Take, say, Citizen Kane, where its influence has carried over to every film thereafter. So judging a film for its technical aspects while ignoring influence would falsely treat it higher and more original that it actually is.
>That being said
You're the only retard here if you rely on your biases to judge a film. You have to separate your consciousness, or not bother judging art at all; subjectivity is worthless.
>>70073359
they should really update the /lit/ memes

>>70072555
are you me?
>>70073560
So you judge a film by how much the director was copied?
Because that's one of the only objective metrics you can judge a film on, along with box office reception.
>>70063545
>>70073494
The problem is there are 3 total cuts, with the theatrical having a voiceover, and Scott's final directors cut having a literal blue tint to everything. He fucked up, it didn't stand a chance to be perfect given the turmoil it has been through.
>>70073654
>along with box office reception.
I can't tell if you're serious.
>>70073705
He's right though, in terms of actual objectivity there's not much else you can judge a film on.
>>70073705
That's one of the few truly objective metrics you can judge a film on.
If someone wants to say that Heavy Metal is the best movie ever made, you've got no objective recourse by your logic apart from box office reception and "influence". Any truly objective critique of a film relies on soulless metrics that betray the medium as an art.
>>70073656
I have noticed the blue green tint, but it doesn't bother me that much. Voice over is crap, and I haven't seen the other release just because I hear it's bad.
>>70062267
>propane tanks exist in ancient Rome
>everything is perfect
lol
>>70073480
>No, you're the pretentious dipshit if you're gonna tell me that battleship potemkin is better than zerkalo, or even 2001.
This is the complete opposite of what I was saying. Did you even read my post?
I am saying that it is an impossibility to ever reach an objective appraisal as having one great achievement in a form be "better" than a great prior achievement in the form: the prior achievement subsists within it and has either directly or indirectly brought about its creation.
>>70073511
>You're hopelessly stupid.
lol...
>>70073763
>Any truly objective critique of a film relies on soulless metrics that betray the medium as an art.
That's just so completely false that I don't even know where to begin my response. Sometimes camera people use innovative techniques no one else has tried. Sometimes the protagonist dies at the end of a movie. There are infinite ways to objectively assess a movie that only concern the actual movie.
>>70074001
I think it's pretty soulless to say that movies with dead protagonists are better than ones without.
>>70073359
Haha holy shit
>>70074051
That's not what I'm saying. It's an objective difference between movies. How you rank them according to differences is up to you. The same applies to box office. Who's to say THE soulless metric shouldn't be revenue/budget? Who's to say THE metric shouldn't be happiness caused in viewers? Just because you're talking about something objectively, doesn't negate the fact you're still being subjective what you choose to talk about.
