There's banter and then there's just cheap shots. You don't mock someone's family or partner, it's an unwritten rule of banter. The audience laughter at that bit is kind of uncomfortable, slightly nervous laughter because of that. 9 times out of 10, if he'd done that to someone in the pub he'd have got a slap, and most punters in the place would've seen it as well deserved.

I don't think his relationship with what's-her-name is completely about fame, based on his reaction to Amstell taking the piss out of her. So cherry picking the most vapid passages of her book and reading them in a snarky way like that is just shitting on someone that Preston cares about, and she's not there to defend herself. If it's something Preston has done that's cringeworthy, hit him with that, but how would you react if someone trashed someone you love like that? I wonder how Amstell would react if Preston started picking on Amstell's partner for whatever reason. I doubt Amstell would find it funny, no matter how true the criticism.

Alan is much more important to QI working than Fry is.
However, if you lose either of them you lose some of the charm. Part of the appeal of QI is that Fry has an incredible talent for condescension. Fry also does a good job of acting like a teacher trying to control a room full of unruly children. Really, Frys job isn't just reading from the script and looking smart. Toksvig could do that. But he also needs to be condescending and a good target for japes, and I don't think Toksvig could do that.
