One of the more beautiful sequences in the kino is the first half of Brett's solo chase of Jones. We are taking our sweet time in "the haunted house", as Ridley would say, looking around a dark garage-area, before slowly moving into the darker, wetter room.
The former room (where Parker and Lambert hastily collect coolant) has this GOLD hue to it in many places; it's easy to forget about.
Much later, there's a great extreme wide shot outiside the ship while Rip is working the Self-Destruct. There's like a tiny matte/processed shot spot where you can just see her moving around inside the ship. We realize the dead immensity of the space around her, first the ship itself, then of course the space. And it's just her. And It. And It is in the way.
Following the Burning of Ash, (and in another sense, following the deaths of Parker and Lambert) is when a whole different horror movie-within-the-movie begins. That chunk by itself would work perfectly as a stand-alone short, without any establishing plot, or other context.
In fact, I think it could be re-imagined has containing zero dialogue, apart from the odd scream, manic whispers, or yelps perhaps.

It's an excuse to talk about Alien, so it's automatically good.
Realtalk: in the movie, there is a subplot of class warfare, which soon falls by the wayside as shit gets real. In the first act, the two engineers/maintenance men (in a crew of seven) complain to the group and amongst themselves that they are only paid half as much as the others (captain, doctor, etc), despite they fact that they too, all memes aside, do perform skilled, mission-critical labor. They're not cooks or "support staff", they literally fix the ship so everyone can go home (although for what it's worth, Brett is a drunk, and the dumbest, lowest-ranking guy on the ship).
Furthermore, they (quite correctly, as it turns out) do not want to hear about any "investigation of a strange signal", which starts the movie going. All anybody /really/ wants to do is to go home, but the captain and the doctor know that if they don't respond to a possible signal, then nobody gets any money, per contract. Once this is straightened out, everyone falls in line, and we've got our movie going.
Parker is defeated by the above. He literally wants to continue to talk about the bonus situation before being rebuffed by Ash and Dallas, but once they shut him up with the above, it's not a topic of discussion anymore.
And that's just wrong. We need to talk about this Bonus Situation.

Of course, when you think about it, events play out in such a way that blowing up the ship was in vain, and unnecessary (unless the alien would not have hid in the shuttle, were it not for the loud confusion of the self-destruct sequence itself). There are some shoulda-wouldas to consider here.
I'm sure that the the company suits from the beginning of Aliens see it this way. (This woman blew up the ship... and this animal she says she tried to kill wasn't even on the ship?! What a waste.)
One also wonders what might have become of the Nostromo and its tow, had the ship not been blown up, and allowed to drift. Either the power could have given out after some years and it would have become a brick, it crashes into some body, or perhaps it enters some stable orbit somewhere, either with or without the benefit of its own autopilot.

It takes its sweet-ass time to get to where it wants to go, and doesn't really dangle any other "plot-noise" in front of us, instead keeping us distracted with impressive sets, lulling us a bit. Nobody actually dies until around the 55-min mark (in the DC I think, the "1:00:00" mark is Rip and our Bonus boys starting to look for the juvenille on the lower deck). The actual things-go-to-shit-humans-interact-with-each-other-and-die-too plot stuff is condensed into a half hour, about the hour mark until the 90 minute mark.
Put this way, the acts (assuming three) can be summed up like so:
1st (one hour): slow unfurling of plot, on and leaving the planet, one alien but it dies and things seem okay.
2nd (half-hour): The alien is not dead, after all. The crew (and a traitor) are rapidly killed until only the Final Girl is left standing.
3rd (half-hour): After much horror, peeking round corridors, and gnashing of teeth, the Final Girl does escape. But it's there, and is finally killed. Then the Final Girl can (finally) rest. [End]
