He needed it to put the blame on her "escape from King's Landing" on the Boltons, so that the Iron Throne wouldn't care if he waged war upon them. Remember the scene where he comes to KL and tells Cersei that the Boltons have revealed Sansa and married her to Ramsay? She then gives him a royal decree to go out and destroy the Boltons with his Vale army.
It's a game of speed chess:

Littlefinger has the best chance out of all the main characters to come out on top, and he deserves to. He came from nothing and worked his ass off, and he got just about everybody dancing to his tune.

Episode 5, Littlefinger is in Moletown, and Tyrion says its been a fortnight since the negotiation

Go even further back and he was the one that created the lie of rhaegar kidnapping lyanna. Around the time of being defeated in combat against neds older brother for cats hand he was told to piss off and had to recover no doubt after being sliced from belly button to collar bone. Theory out there is that he somehow came across the knowledge of the two eloping. His first lie is that she's been kidnapped .When you watch the conversation he has with sansa in the crypts of winterfell it's obvious he knew otherwise when sansa said she was kidnapped raped and killed etc. Was about to tell her the truth then changed subject and asked to away from where the dead couldn't hear them.
