Because the first scene was background context to provide a great unknown terror, which the drama is presented against. The draw of the books and show is the drama. The magic is infinitely more interesting as an unknown, barely seen terror. The books don't show a battle at hardhome, there's just letters received that describe it, which leaves it to readers interpretation. It's why lovecraft worked so well; the reader imagines terrifying things in his/her own way, not through describing something. The magic is shit when shown.
