ahah time for predictions.

Palme d'or : Toni Erdmann

Best actress : Sonia Braga
Jury prize : The Neon Demon
Best director : Olivier Assayas
Best screenplay : Julieta
Camera d'or : Raw

I believe this year will be bold

FilmLand Empire @FilmLandEmpire
A spider web of dark humour and gleeful perversion. Reminded me of Verhoeven's 80's films, loved it! #Cannes2016
(Running out with adjectives with Isabelle Huppert! Let's just say her performance in ELLE is one of her finest)
(The Lumière audience laughed a lot, even spontaneously applauding a couple of times)

Marc v.d. Klashorst @MarcVDKlashorst
Elle: twisted, trashy, rivals Toni Erdmann for funniest entry. Intentionally. Huppelt superb #cannes2016

Charles Bramesco @intothecrevasse
ELLE: I found nothing funny or titillating about Verhoeven's playful treatment of rape. The family stuff could've sustained this on its own.

Benjamin Lee @benfraserlee
Elle is an entirely heartless & wildly, staggeringly perverted thriller. Probably the most genuine fun I've had this festival #Cannes2016

Gregory Ellwood @TheGregoryE
Isabelle Huppert is fucking fantastic in Paul Verhoveen's very entertaining if not slightly long Elle. Could be nice art house hit. #cannes
(One of the coolest things about Elle is Huppert is playing a character 15 years younger than her own age and it totally works #cannes)

Ken Adams @TaybackX
ELLE: I was promised a total knockout, and that's exactly what I got. Twisted Verhoeven-sequel trash of the best kind. BRAVO. #Cannes2016
(And Legend Huppert fucking slays the shit out of the devious camp given to her. #Cannes2016 #Elle)

Alexandra Zawia @alexandrazawia
#Elle (Paul Verhoeven) is pure genius #Cannes2016

Alex Billington @firstshowing
Elle - Verhoeven reigns! Isabelle Huppert is so badass in this amusingly devious French sex thriller. Sooooo twisted, so crazy, but so good.
(No doubt about it some people are going to despise Elle and it's twisted, devious characters, but Huppert totally totally owns this role)

Screen Comment @SCREENCOMMENT
#Elle fun watch but the ranking, the status quo concerning the other films, will remain unchanged probably #Cannes2016
>>
Nicholas Bell @RagingBells
Elle is a perverse return to form for Verhoeven. Huppert is fantastic-it was everything I was hoping for. #IsabelleHuppert #Cannes2016 #Elle

Xan Brooks @XanBrooks
Paul Verhoeven's Elle closes #Cannes2016 competition by whisking us down to hell. Delirious, provocative, pitch-black comedy. Huppert superb

no cannes do @whocaresdad
#Elle is the best film of the fest. I'm in love. @Festival_Cannes #Cannes2016

Robbie Collin @robbiereviews
Elle (Verhoeven): the Starship Troopers of rape/revenge thrillers. A needling, ingenious challenge. God-level Huppert. #Cannes2016
(NB: be wary of superficial takes on this, of which I'm guessing there will be a few)

Ben Croll @becroll
ELLE: they saved the best for last.
(hardly the rape/revenge thriller it's made out to be. More interested in being a pitch perfect black comedy, a belly laugh every 5 min)

Jason Ooi @JasonOfOoi
#Elle is a haunting relationship thriller. Fantastic performances, gripping, and perhaps the festival's funniest too. #cannes2016

Peter Bradshaw @PeterBradshaw1
Eszterhas meets Chabrol in Paul Verhoeven's Elle: horribly incorrect, with glacial anti-clerical satire. An unexpected hit at #Cannes2016

Jason Gorber @filmfest_ca
Verhoeven's tale of violation is so very French, so very dark and funny, so very excellent #Elle #cannes2016

Nikola Grozdanović @nikgroz
ELLE: Hilarious, demented & gender-psychological to the bone. Leave it to Verhoeven to make a genre film with SO much to unpack. #Cannes2016

Matthew Anderson @MattAndersonBBC
Saw Paul Verhoeven's #Elle at #Cannes2016. It was totally ridiculous and it the worst possible taste. Loved it

Diego Lerer @dlerer
Paul Verhoeven film was the perfect closing of the competition. A great, perverse, comic thriller. #Cannes2016

Peter Howell @peterhowellfilm
ELLE: Starts suspenseful, turns silly, but Verhoeven thriller powered throughout by Isabelle Huppert's furious energy. #Cannes2016

John Bleasdale @drjonty
Paul Verhoeven returns to #Cannes with Elle, a witty well-made but ultimately toxic rape comedy @CineVue

Fabien Lemercier @FabienLemercier
Elle by Paul Verhoeven #Cannes2016 Competition = 3,5/5

Adam Batty @adamhopelies
Thoughts on Verhoeven: Totally Indifferent.

Anne Thompson @akstanwyck
In Elle, despite Paul Verhoeven's attempts at a stupid violent sex fantasy, the great Isabelle Huppert somehow rises above the silliness.

Mike D'Angelo @gemko
Elle (Verhoeven): 63. Thought I had this pegged as a deliciously perverse ode to embracing one's true nature. Then the ending befuddled me.

David Verdeure @davidverdeure
From rape culture to Gamergate, Verhoeven's sexual panoply Elle (#Cannes2016, B+) favors provocation over profundity but is superior pulp.

honestly, i kind of agree with Dolan on this. these flash-reviews posted minutes after a film has been screened are more akin to gossip than journalism. then again, calling a film reviewer a journalist is a bit of a stretch. a first impression reaction is devoid of analysis and contemplation, the very principles of critical thinking. i think film reviewers should let a film percolate in their minds for a couple of days before writing their reviews. a visceral reaction does not a worthy review make. my two cents.

ps. i write this having never seen a Dolan movie.

>>
>>69821790
yes, based on their initial reaction after screening a film in a very biased atmosphere. i mean, i give a filmmaker the benefit of the doubt any day before a reviewer. hence, i often do not read reviews until after i've seen a film, and most of the time all i see are plot breakdowns instead of critical analysis of what made a narrative work or not work.
>>

I think the plot breakdown is a very real criticism which is a big problem in mainstream reviews across all narrative media, similarly I am much more inclined towards critical discourse. As an experiment I once wrote 2 reviews on letterboxd, one was short and mostly generic while the other was a brief but indepth look at one theme in the film (of course none of this was controlled and isn't a real experiment or anything but both were pretty well known arthouse) and the former got more likes than the latter even though I consider the latter a better piece of writing and analysis. I guess most people just want generalised discourse which they can manipulate to reflect their own thoughts.
