Name me your favorite director, /tv/
Jeff Nichols is one of the handful of directors that I deem so damaging to the medium that I would feel obliged to do everything within my power to eliminate them on sight if I ever crossed paths with them in real life.
Haven't endured Midnight Special yet, I'm saving it for a night of particular self hatred. If you think this man has provided anything of value in his career then you are infantile about film.

Tarkovsky.
If you're talking directors that are working right now, then probably Jodorowsky.
Russ Meyer

Mud is one of the worst films American cinema has provided in the last decade. This man is a hack through and through but good job singling out his very worst movie.
Abel Ferrara

>Speaking at the press conference for the film in Cannes, Nichols, Edgerton and Negga politely dodged questions about next year's Academy Awards —"I'm practicing my acceptance speech," Edgerton joked — but they did speak to the broader importance of the film in the debate on race and equality in the U.S.
>"I hope this is the quiet film of the year, and I hope it puts people at the center of these issues, of these debates," said Nichols. "You can sit at your armchair at home and espouse all these issues, but they affect people."

I wholeheatedly non ironically agree. His entire filmstock is just soaked in cocaine. I really wish that great man would get back on the white horse

Care to expand as to why? This post is meaningless without objective reasons
Bresson
#1 I'm old
#2 He's underrated
#3 He's really going to be missed when he's gone
He is SOLID as fuck as a director. And that is saying something. He's not flashy or stylish, but is so great at composing a shot. Fuck you if you call me a pleb etc.

He has some great movies, but so many awful ones
>>69754883
True, but has had an incredibly long career, so that is to be expected. He could direct literally any script that is passed around, but still wants to make Indy movies 35 years later. I think that says something about him. He likes what he likes and has the luxury to do what he wants. They're not all great, but he at least cares.
I was watching To Catch A Thief a few weekends ago, and was reminded again how similar his style is to Hitchcock's. He's the last great classical director around, and he's still putting out movies that are better than most other's.
Bridge of Spies wasn't great, and he really wanted to hit people over the head with some of the themes and symbolism, but it was a very well made and surprisingly entertaining movie. One of the better ones I saw last year.

my fave's gotta be Bergman or Schwartzhoff
>>69755771
Mann's most popular/best work is his work in the crime genre, yeah, but he's pretty far from being a one-trick pony. ALI and THE INSIDER are both fantastic. Plus, his thrillers don't even come close to feeling predictable or homogenous. You can't honestly tell me that anyone could ever conflate MANHUNTER and MIAMI VICE, or HEAT and THIEF.
Paul Greengrass is my favorite working director
Either Howard Hawks or Mario Bava
>Nobody's mentioned Werner Herzog yet
>>69756031
Bava is great. Black Sunday is in my top 5.

>Black Sunday is in my top 5.
Definitely his best IMO
Is this based on consistency, or just if they've made one or two insanely good films and the rest is mediocre?
>>69756586
Just me, but I base it on a combination of how much I love their directing style and the overall strength of their filmography
