They got greedy and stupid trying to explain their origins on 2 and telling a story about the future when there's so much to explore about the past. Fucking general katana's acting is one of the worst I've ever seen.
3 is objectively competent, since it just tells us "oh, it's not over yet, there's a frozen guy" and introduces the not-absurd idea of using the power of immortality create illusions. The stupid cartoon had other uses for the quickening as well, if I can recall.
But then that series, I mean, that thing is unwatchable. I've tried more than once. And every movie based on the series.

It's weird how animated shit was better at contributing to the franchise than live action was.
The cartoon was smart in restarting the game with the death of Connor MacCleod and playing around with the rules of the game without resorting to ayylmao shit.
The anime movie also threw out better ideas by telling a story that didn't conclusively end the game by the end, opting for vengeance being the main character's only real motivation. Fight scenes were also creative and took advantage of the characters' immortality (fighting on the wing of a Fokker in WWII, for example, or the mc's wife's failed assassination of the antagonist).
Both examples ended up being ultimately better than their live action counterparts, and there's really no excuse for it.
