You're right, except Scranton branch was consistently the top performing branch in the company. You can't really argue he's a bad manager, even if the reason it was so good was all the workers (possibly subconsciously) working harder to make up for their retardedly inept boss - it still worked.

I feel that's the most likely reason the branch performed well with Micheal in charge, there are multiple episodes where all the employees are aware of corporate trouble/possible branch closure, and also episodes showing how well they CAN perform together given the proper motivation (Andy's tattoo).

All in all, completely lucky and probably impossible to recreate chaotic social work environment actually produced some real economics results.
