The Invasion of Time edition

What did you think of this story?
It's GOAT isn't it?
Very underrated isn't it?

>it's a Gallifrey episode post-Deadly Assassin
On the other hand
>it's a Tom Baker gets to act evil episode
On the other hand
>it's a best companion gets arbitrarily married off to someone she's had almost no screentime with episode
>>
>people who thought BF would 'fix' 10's era

People like you or I who think of 'fixing 10' as even something conceivable, let alone desirable, are firmly in the minority. The 10 era is something that went down as hugely popular and beloved, with shitloads of largely uncritical fans.
The idea that, in trying to court these people for money, BF would indulge our desires to see something altered - rather than the fans' desires to see the same thing reiterated - is self-evidently silly.
>>
>>69643354
The first four episodes are very good. It's interesting not to know what the Doctor is up to, and the twists work well enough.
The last two parts are absolutely terrible though, nothing but running around the TARDIS chased by a couple of Sontarans, followed by Leela's awful departure.

>>
>>69644226
I know you're joking but you're taking that line out of context.
>>
>>69643603
Even without bringing the popularity of the era into this, Big Finish has done almost nothing for the last couple of years except try to 'recapture the feeling' of this or that era of the show.
I've listened to the first couple of episodes and they feel like mediocre RTD-era episodes, just like the Third Doctor Adventures that came out a few months ago felt like two mediocre Letts-era episodes.
It's just what BF does for the most part nowadays, unfortunately. I'm hoping the third one by Goss will be better.
>>
>>69644226
The problem with the "no weapons" things is it doesn't take into account situations with no other solutions. Plus the Doctor regularly kills Daleks and other things by indirect methods.
The Doctor may go into any situation without a gun drawn but he is always prepared to fuck up anyone who is doing bad things.
>>
>>69644293
>I'm hoping the third one by Goss will be better.
Fingers crossed but I believe that one is a comedy historical so I fear the worst.

Third Doctor stories unrestrained by any link to 20th-century Earth would be very nice.
In fact they already kind of gave him a new companion, but he only appeared when the Fourth Doctor went to pay him a visit years after he left the TARDIS.
>>
>>69644718
That would give them an entire new cast rather than keep using the aging actors, which can't go on forever.
>>
>>69645009
You can even tie it in to Jo's departure. The Doctor goes away from the UNIT stuff for a period.

Recasting is only truly safe with dead people. If they're still alive and you recast, you've pretty much buried any chance of getting them on board later on. I reckon Eccleston is still well within the range that they're holding out hope. Unless he literally gets a restraining order against them or has some debilitating illness, I don't see him being recast before 65

>Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale is a 2008 book collecting e-mail correspondence between Russell T Davies, executive producer and head writer on the revived Doctor Who series, and Benjamin Cook, a journalist and writer for Doctor Who Magazine. In the first edition, the e-mails date from between February 2007 and April 2008 and cover the period of broadcast of Series 3, and preparation and production of Series 4, linking in with Davies' decision to move on from Doctor Who after the 2009 Specials. Interspersed are photos, illustrations, and script excerpts.

"Compassion. It will kill you in the end." - Davros, The Witch's Familiar

I think this is Moffat foreshadowing Capaldi's regeneration. Moffat originally wanted a woman.
But Gareth stepped in.

And there's a rule at the BBC.
You never say no to Gareth Roberts.

Gareth has been responsible for a lot of executive Doctor Who decisions in recent years. He suggested Pearl Mackie's casting as well.

And, did you know, Gareth Roberts ghost wrote Day of the Doctor!

>Peter Trivelli - U.S.A.
>If you were producing Doctor Who today, what approach would you take concerning the Doctor and the tone of the show?

>Dear Peter
>I hope I would have found talents like Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat to work with because they are superb writers with a clear vision of the show. Much of what they have done with the programme is redolent of my era, to me at least, but maybe I'm biased! And their choice of Doctors has been inspired.

>I'm not sure I would have had the imagination to modernise the relationship between the Doctor and his companions in the way they have, introducing more emotional depth to the stories. And most of the time I like the contemporary humour and "post-modern" referencing. I think they have done in the modern era what I tried to do when I took it over; which was to preserve and honour the core values of the show but also to innovate, and surprise and delight the child in us all.

It's just we've only seen the restaurant, and the empty landscape where the Towers sit (speaking of which, they probably bring in good tourism money). If Darillium wasn't a nice place to spend 24 years, one suspects we might have been given the hint.
And speaking of which, the Doctor could totally have brought them there a few years later if he wanted, there was nothing tying him to a full night.

I'm a firm believer that the real Doctor Who exists in the mind of the viewer, so I can't begrudge people if they want to radically misread the cues given by the show just so they don't have to believe the Doctor sincerely likes someone they hate. Even if that is roughly on par with Tumblrs claiming 11 was the Valeyard because they didn't like him.

I've finished the stories, listened to the extras and thought about it a bit, here's my review (I'm >>69644293 btw).
I like the RTD stuff, so I didn't start out with a negative bias against this. I still didn't like it much.

Technophobia: Wow, what an incredibly generic story to start a range with. The people in the extras say that they were trying to mimic a Tennant season opener with aliens attacking Earth, but those openers had considerably more interesting stuff in them than this. It's closer to the kind of dull, B-movie style story that you sometimes got in the middle of a season, like The Lazarus Experiment or The Sontaran Stratagem. I suppose the first act twist (making you think that people are being attacked by technological devices only to reveal that the aliens are just making people unable to understand technology) is kind of clever, but the interesting bit of the story starts and ends there. The ending is so generic that it hardly deserves spoiler tags: the Doctor offers the aliens the chance to leave in peace, and when they refuse he turns their own device against them. It's not badly written, but it's terribly run-of-the-mill. Let's say a 5 out of 10.

Time Reaver: This is actually two stories glued together. The first one is a serious story about a girl and her father, a terrible alien weapon and a doomed people. The second one is a comedy romp about an artificial planet full of shady but ultimately nice aliens that has been taken over by another bunch of aliens who are boring and bureaucratic, with a pirate squid as the main villain. And the two stories just don't mesh, so the end result is a muddled episode that throws away most of its interesting ideas, rather like New Earth (also, I'm convinced that Nick Briggs doesn't know what cyberpunk is, as he calls this "a sci-fi, cyberpunk kind of story" in the extras, but I can't think of any cyberpunk elements about it). (cont.)The banter between Ten and Donna also feels more forced and unfunny than it ever was on TV (LE PLANET OF THE BOYS XD). I suppose at least Terry Molloy is good in it. 3/10

Death and the Queen: Ah, this is more like it. The first thing that I noticed about this was the change in the Ten/Donna dialogue from the previous story: here, it's witty and amusing, and this is the first episode that actually made me feel glad that Big Finish is writing for the duo. The plot is also a refreshing change: instead of going for the "RTD feel", it goes in a new direction; I'm not going to spoil anything because it's quite good. The tone remains light for most of the time, but, unlike the previous episode, when things get more serious near the end it feels like it is flowing naturally from the course of the story (maybe it gets a bit too silly after the resolution, but that might just be my subjective view). The one thing that I didn't like was the setting (some slight spoilers here): it takes place in an imaginary European country, which mostly kind of works because the story has a sort of twisted fairy-tale aesthetic, and because a reason why nobody knows of this place is offered. However, at the end of that story that reason doesn't exist anymore, and the Doctor starts name-dropping actual historical people like Napoleon, and that's where my suspension of disbelief snaps. I think it would have been better if this had been set on an alien planet, rather than on Earth. Still, I really enjoyed this. 7/10.

The average is 5/10. Maybe it could stretch to 6/10 for the novelty factor, if you're REALLY anxious to have Ten and Donna back, but on the whole this is nothing special.
I hope the next Tenth Doctor stories will take their clues from the third episode of this, and avoid trying to mimic the style of the RTD era too much (or at the very least, mimic the style of GOOD episodes, we don't need more awful New Earths or dull Sontaran Stratagems).

Chill out buddies I don't reject the existence of McGann, just 7 getting randomly shot in a street and then killed by drugs. I get that it's dramatic irony and everything due to his schemer nature but it would have been a lot better if it had been done intentionally, rather than obliviously

>>
>>69657942
why would they need to use a fade to black instead of showing an actual kiss if that was the intention? we saw her kiss 11 plenty of times. 12 didn't want to kiss her m8
>>
>>69658306
He didn't kiss her. 12 is gay. It's not explicitly stated, but it's heavily implied in the narrative of (most) stories. Once you realise it, it becomes more apparent and very very obvious when you listen to the dialogue.

You're not as observant as me. I'm a film theorist. I know my stuff. The narrative suggests he is gay. He's not asexual as you homophobes would like to think.

His sexuality is very unverbalized, but it's there. I suggest you pay attention when watching a Peter Capaldi episode. You will see it eventually.

I expect they will explore it further and more explicitly in series 10 with the new lesbian companion.
>>
>>69659110
No I miss her. Fuck off Capaldick you have Pearl now.

Okay. Show us some of this apparent dialogue that proves he's gay.
>>
>>69658831
Like I said, I feel that exact same thematic point could have been done in a much more impressive manner. Like if you briefed anyone who ever wrote a good McCoy story to write a regeneration for him that happens by accident and leaves him helpless, it could be GOAT.
As is, it feels like they just didn't have any ideas and wanted to get to handsome pretty McGann and his quasi-romance with the new companion. (Also it's staggeringly dumb that human anaesthetic would kill him, just putting it out there.)

>>
>>69659431
It turns out I misremembered that entire scene so it's a moot point. They actually kill him by fiddling around inside his circulatory system like muppets.
You could stretch it and suggest that the botched surgery is an ironic reflection of the precision with which he would plan his victories. But it's still an awkward fit. It's like his karmic downfall happened on a meta level, the inept ham hands of fate preventing him from even getting an ending that meaningfully extended out of his previous run or characterisation.
>>
You know this '12 is gay' anon is a straight man. Possibly a slightly insecure one. Only they would interpret 'not eating a woman's face off or getting teenage boners at her slightest touch' as proof of homosexuality.

11 definitely swung both ways though.

I love this one but I always had one question:

Why did the Doctor START the whole thing? They couldn't have invaded without him, so shouldn't he have just told Borusa they were a potential threat & the Time Lords would have time-locked them without the shitsorm?

>“Normally you have about five or six months to set up and do preparation on a series with, usually, a few unused stories in the cupboard. We had nothing. The Invasion of Time came about because the original script for that slot came in right up against the deadline. And when it did come in, it proved to be unworkable. It just could not be done. There were things in it, I remember, like an amphitheatre the size of Wembley Stadium filled with killer cats in the audience. So that story went out of the window, leaving us just five days to write three hours of television. I don’t think either Anthony Read or I went to bed for three days solid.
