Season two had some good things going for it (Valcoro,Vince's story line), but it was bogged down in a boring "complex" plot and two many unnecessary characters. And Ultimately it lacked the mystery, charm, and beautiful direction of season one.

has there been greater tits on tv?

One of Vince Vaughn's henchmen is killed in an early episode. This henchman is referred to by his proper name. He was never mentioned nor appeared on screen prior to his announced death. His death played no role in developing the story or moving the plot forward. Towards the end of the season his widow is visited by Vaughn to.... I can't even remember.

There was just too much of the vague fuckery and red herring shit going on.

When your audience finds itself having to web search characters names multiple times during the season to remember who he is/was then you are doing it wrong.
>>
>>69634870
Daddario will never put you in handcuffs and ride you to Train Song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AGD78mWcss
>>
>>69635162
The vagueness and briefly mentioned, mostly unimportant characters were there in s1 too.
Personally I couldn't even tell what people's names were even when they were mentioned multiple times since I'm not a native speaker and everyone constantly mumbles.
That's one of the appeals of the show to me however, I actually like the confusion and I believe it to be very realistic, compared to other crime shows at least.
>>
The season 2 plot is baffling. Pizzaman managed to somehow create a story that was simultaneously convoluted and paper thin.

It just wasn't compelling at all.
>>
>>69634961
It's supposed to be that shit that makes the scene makes more sense subconsciously and is fun to notice.

Also you have to remember the main villain was a smaller part of a cult that's reaches extend far
>>
>>69634683
>he gets killed like it's nothing
he would have been a better villain than wacky fat man
>>
>>69635499
>>he gets killed like it's nothing

This is entirely ok. He was creepy and interesting, but obviously just a pawn in the wider picture. Le wacky fat inbred man was kinda shit though, and him being the gardener was even more shit.
>>
>>69635385
The more obvious problem is that the villains of the season are just corrupt cops and government officials. The corruption has no intrigue. There's no stakes until the ass-half of the season. It's just old men having sex parties with consenting prostitutes then we find out about the jewel thing in the last episode. Who gives a shit? Just because some people who really shouldn't be doing illegal things don't mean we care.

Compare that to season one where it's established in the first episode that there's a deranged child murderer on the loose.
>>
>>69635499
>This post
What, did you expect a hand to hand fight on a skyscraper or something? The scene where marty executes him out of rage is one of the best in the show.
>>
>>69635530
>Le wacky fat inbred man was kinda shit though, and him being the gardener was even more shit.

Childress was fucking terrifying. He seems like a humble country boy infront of the cops and to normal people, then when he's alone he talks like a literary character and then shifts into creepy psychotic talk.
>>
>>69634961
It was meant to show the omnipotence of the cult. They are everywhere, on a symbolic level.
>>
>>69635636

Maybe it's a matter of taste but he wasn't just that terrifying to me. I get what they were going for with his inane posh accent, and his wack sister was fairly disturbing, but he just wasn't a very satisfying final villain even though the pieces were there.

His environment (house and Carcosa) told a better story than his character. I liked the part when he was calling Rust "little priest" but everything else about his character was on the verge of being ridiculous.
>>
>>69635533
>Who gives a shit? Just because some people who really shouldn't be doing illegal things don't mean we care.
Oh boy. Try living somewhere with high levels of corruption and then you'll understand intrigue.
>>
>>69635744
Yeah, having him be an interdimensional portal demon, like /tv/ originally thought, would have been much more satisfying.
>>
>>69635841
There should've been a blue laser shooting to the sky when he died followed by a big explosion that rust would've survived cause he's badass lol, just like me ecksdee.
>>
>>69635598
no, and i agree with you about that scene, but childress wasn't a great choice
>>
>>69635841
yeah that's the only other alternative
>>
>>69634841
He was practically a parody of the type of stock character (experienced villain trying to go straight) that appears in crime shows/films except played straight.
>>
>>69634669
It got fucking worse, anon. No joke.
>>
>>69635841
Joking aside, a massive draw for many people in S1 was the horror references (e.g. Chambers, Ligotti, Bierce), Rust's narcotic visions, and the sense of supernatural dread the villains cast. I never actually believed the murderer would be revealed to be a Lovecraftian cosmic entity but that atmosphere of subtle implications and touches here and there are what really made the show stand out.
>>
Most of the complaints in this thread are vague and buzzwordy. The reason most people didn't like s2 is because it was very subdued, slow-paced and rather complicated for something that you come back to in weekly intervals.
I guess those can be seen as negatives for some, but you can't say that it's objectively worse than s1.
Also s1 had a steady director while s2 didn't, which caused a few episodes to be lower quality, on the whole however both seasons are pretty good imo.
>>
In all honesty, senpaitachi, I just couldn't feel anything for the characters in S2. Old wood-face Woodrow & maybe-have-sex Bezerides couldn't raise a care out of me if they tried. Valcoro's "failure-as-a-father-but-a-damn-good-cop" backstory we've seen so many times before as have we seen Semyon's mature-crim-going-straight routine.

The plot seemed incredibly muddled. Why did we need to see Valcoro informing Semyon of the investigation when the latter could have just conducted his own investigation using his own criminal contacts (and cutting a lot of red tape), thus making Semyon more relevant to the plot.

Over all, I think the Dorne subplot of S5 of GoT had about the same merit and entertainment value.
>>
>>69633659
They were shit.
>muh lovecraft
>muh yellow king
>muh rust is the killer
>muh no, marty is the killer
>muh green ears
>>
>>69635385

ye. tho I liked the characters
>>
>>69636441
Are you saying that you preferred Rust and Marty and their infinitely more cliched backgrounds?
To clarify, I also did, I just don't believe that the characters were any worse in S2, there were just more of them and not enough time to focus on each one.
>>
>>69636221
The reason I didn't like season 2 was because it had too many main characters, so it kept bouncing all over the fucking place.
>>
>>69636744
Fair enough, I agree with that statement and this post was mine too>>69636678.
>>
>>69636678
Rust's background was cliched (undercover-turned-junky with no social skills but one hell of a cop) but I thought what they did with him (the visions, the nihilism, the whole attitude) was just far more interesting than what they did with S2's characters.

To be fair Pizzaman and Fukunaga put in great work on season one as well, Harrelson was also amazing. It's just a superb series of TV all round.
>>
>>69634184
this

s1 had mystery to it
s2 was all depressed people and some stupid shit about buying up land cheap that would then become valuable.
>>
Season 2 isn't that bad, but it really didn't need Taylor Kitsch or to a lesser extent Rachel McAdams' characters. They added nothing to the show for the most part.

That was somewhat the point though. They found out the best they could get was some inbred dude killing people but the reality of it was that it was all part of a upper class cult. That's why the entire end monologue is about their failure still being a step in the right direction.

my two favorite lines of season 2 were "the blue balls in my heart" line by Frank and Velcoro telling gay cop to get some Pedialyte for his hangover. oh and when gay cop called his mother a cooz. not sure which one was worse.

overall, s2 was a letdown. Fukunaga elevated the material of s1, the handful of directors for s2 did the story no service. i feel a good story was there, it was just handled improperly. lots of pointless scenes, underwhelming action, convoluted narrative, etc.

>>
>>69634224
the acting wasn't really consistent, other than Rust, a lot of the characters in season 1 felt like they could have been real people
Everyone in season 2 felt like they were larger than life and not everyone was that great at acting
The cinematography was a huge downgrade from season 1 too. A lot of it looked like a basic network show. It took away the atmosphere that season 1 had.
>>
I really hated how season 2 had the 2 different police stations contrasting so blatantly with eachother. The one Velcoro was part of looked like it came from the 70s and so did everyone in it, and it's where the corruption came from.

The one Ani was part of was modern and clean and they were all by the book in there, no tolerance for corruption.

How lazy can you be with this shit seriously?
