1 year ago today, the penultimate episode of Mad Men aired. It's almost been a year, bros. Where has the time gone and why has nothing filled the void?
Did he find peace bros?

;_;
>>69358299
I like to think so, even though he still has nobody left when he gets back. He doesn't even have custody of his children. His closest thing to a friend, Roger, is married to the mother of his ex-wife who hates him, and they probably wouldn't see each other much at McCann anyway. He would need to make amends with a lot of people, or meet new people to avoid falling into depression again.
>>69358532
he'll have peggy, and I think his kids would come around eventually.
>>69358582
But Peggy doesn't live to serve him anymore, and she finally realized she loved someone. Even Pete, who he had an uneasy alliance with, left for Kansas. Bert died and Betty is dying. He's not returning to the same life he once lived.

>>69358654
>>69358532
Don't worry bros. Don will persevere as always. He'll be making coca-cola ads and banging qts until he dies at the age of 76 from a heart attack at work ala Roger.
>>69358654
>He's not returning to the same life he once lived.
I agree but peggy not living to serve him anymore wont matter because they still have a close bond.
his relationship with pete by the end is more than an uneasy alliance, though yeah hes in kansas.
To me, he has found happiness by realizing being an adman was something he didnt steal from real draper. its what hes bvest at, its his passion and he ends the series knowing that he doesnt have to run anymore.
fuck this show was the best
>>69358299
No. He came up with the coke ad idea and then continued to be the same person for the rest of his life.
I held off on rewatching it. Just started season 2 yesterday. Feels like being with old friends. I get to see my boys grow up again.
Watching the series again now with my gf who hasn't seen it before. Safe to say this is the confirmed GOAT series. Don is sitting with Anna Draper in season two while she's still alive :(
Can't wait to get to the later seasons.
>>69358654
That's a good thing though, he had to start fresh for real this time

This show is the most overrated shit I've ever seen. Every epsidoe I watch, i'm like "Why is everyone sucking this show's dick?"
I never understood what peter griffin meant when he said the god father insists upon itself. I do now with this shitty show.
>>69358706
>>69358972
>I take critical advice from peter griffin from family guy
>I can't into subtlety, ambiguity, or anything that might require me to invest some brainpower to help me reach understanding of characters, motifs, or themes
sad really
>>69358971
This wasn't real at all, though. Don spent the entire day before this thinking of Ginsberg. He was threatened by his ad that everyone liked better, so he left it behind in favor of his own.
Out of context, it's a badass moment. But this is Don at his most insecure.
>>69358972
Do you think Breaking Bad is the greatest show ever, anon?
>>69358148
I've just reached season 6 will I be satisfied with the ending?
>>69359173
I think it's among the best ever, but you have to understand it. I'm 24 and a lot of people I know thought the ending sucked, but they're also certified plebs so I guess it depends if you're an idiot or not.
>>69359158
Game of Thrones is the best show.
>>69359129
Sounds pretty real to me. He did care but said he didn't.
>>69359326
A few months ago, this would be obvious bait, but since this place turned into Reddit 2: Capeshit Boogaloo, I can't even be sure anymore.
>>69358148
Fuck I miss this show. Literally the GOAT show. You can find new shit to think about from it every time you rewatch it
>>69359173
I was very satisfied. Season 6 is probably my favorite tv season ever and I loved the way the show concluded the events of that season and the show overall. Season 6 was the climax of Don's character imo.

How would we go about organizing/scheduling a /tv/ rewatch? It's something I would be completely interested in.

This is great because both viewpoints have merit. Also,

>>69358299
Yes and no. He said it himself, happiness is the moment before you want more happiness. He's happy after the ad, but depression will sink in again just like everything else, then maybe he'll be happy again. Rinse and repeat.

>>69362922
That's what Don once thought. His opinions evolved over the course of the series. In the first episode he told Rachel that "love" doesn't exist and that it was invented by guys like him to sell nylons. In a later episode, he was adamant about not using "love" in any of their ads, because it was cheapening the word to use it in such a trivial way.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7uSOcNVDMk
I think his outlook on life changed at the retreat, particularly during the fridge dream speech.

If anything it made him don draper again, he was happy because he just thought of the next great ad
>>69359659

I dunno man, hearing that speech was like the first time Don ever really felt empathy for someone else. That kinda shit doesn't just go away.

>it's a Pete rapes his neighbour's german au pair episode
Why was he so based bros?
>>69363069
True, his opinions do change, but it doesnt mean the fact changes too. I think its pretty true what he said, no one is ever happy for the rest of their life, there is always sadness and depression around the corner.
>>69362922
I think, on a fundamental level, Don really does enjoy his job as a high level ad man, He's creative, good talker, has a knack for expressing his ideas, and can always command attention in any room. He knows he's good at it, and enjoys that.
It's just being an ad man during this time (and probably now) leads you right into that toxic life style, surrounded by alcohol, cigarettes, adultery and greed. That's what was really bringing Don down, not the work he was doing. I think at the end during the retreat, he realized that he enjoyed his career, just not the life surrounding it.
It's obvious he returns to the job, the question is can he really escape what it does to you as a person. That part I don't know, for Don's sake I hope he did.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I feel like the last two episodes were entirely superfluous and I would have preferred the show ended with Lost Horizon
I felt the last two episodes descended too much into melodrama and Betty's cancer plot was a hamfisted attempt to create sympathy towards her
>it's a ginsberg spills his spaghetti while on a blind date with a qt teacher episode

The finale, and the entire final run of episodes in general, was masterfully acted by Jon Hamm. The character of Don Draper didn't typically for a ton of noticeable range, but the subtleties he displayed brought the character to life.

Who cares? Don says anything to anyone as long as it suits him. Betty catches this plenty of time

>>69367844
I enjoyed the episode where don and Betty went to his camp but it was more about Betty and don than Bobby. I think in a small part it's because they replaced the actor so many times and the fact that he was much younger and didn't fully understand everything going on around him, like when the negro woman broke into the house he didn't really care other than "can we watch TV" so it makes sense he didn't have a bigger role

Yeah he was definitely always crazy. Noone caught on though because he was good at his job and just thought he had a weird sense of humor. There were a lot of scenes of him talking about getting radio waves beamed into his head and everyone kinda laughing it off. I think Peggy kind of knew he was crazy but didn't care until he cut off his nipple for her.
Also I think he was a really interesting character, with him being born in a concentration camp and everything

>>69368330
He definitely added an interesting dynamic to the show and I'm really glad they wrote him into it. Not only was he an interesting character he also made you pay attention and think about some things that we may not have with out him. Like you said with the computer, to the viewer we don't really think about it much because we take them for granted but for someone in that time period, you're right that's an absolutely crazy thing for them and we get to see that reaction in a character. And the other thing that Ginsberg made me think about was how babies were born in concentration camps and you would never think about that outside a book on the Holocaust.
>>69368614
He was supposed to off himself with it when he go divorced, but the writers pussed out because he was a fan favorite.
Fucking do it faggot, pete didn't deserve the comfy end he got
>>69368696
Yeah it is sort of interesting to see people with a living memory of the Holocaust and the children of it just living their lives without always calling attention to it. Obviously that couldn't happen and not shape you in some way, but it's life and people do their best to work past it, unlike most Hollywood depictions of the era
>>69368784
>X fan favorite was really going to be killed but the writers changed their minds.
I see this for every show. Jesse on BB, Omar on The Wire, maybe even Christopher on Sopranos. I don't believe any at this point
>>69368784
So I'm assuming they went with Lane as a plan-B?
That's weird to think about.
>>69368784
Didn't the actor put a ton of work into the character? Trying to get the accent down and everything. Don't know why they would plan on killing him
>also 22 can't kill anyone

>>69368960
It's touchy. He technically did deserve to be fired for what he did. But he was consistently screwed over financially. He could have avoided it altogether, as I'm sure someone would have helped him out if he asked, but he let his pride get in the way. Lane is one of the most tragic characters in TV history.

>>69369260
>Also don never said anything about firing him, I don't remember it ever coming up again
Probably because Don wanted to cover it up. If he admitted that Lane forged his signature, his wife and children probably wouldn't get any money from Lane being a partner.
>>69368796
>the holocaust was real
>>69369260
>Also don never said anything about firing him, I don't remember it ever coming up again
Technically Don didn't fire him, just forced him to resign because he thought he was doing him a favor by not telling anyone what he did and letting him go out with some pride.
After Lane killed himself, Don didn't mention anything because he felt like he was responsible, just like with his brother's suicide. The look on Don's face when Roger opens up the envelope and finds the "boilerplate" resignation letter says it all.
>>69369398
I feel like he also didn't want lanes memory to be tarnished by everyone thinking he stole the money
Good thread boys. It's 130am here and I got an exam tomorrow
>>69369337
I actually got a little irritated by that plot line.
>>69369337
This was such pain to watch
I haven't even bothered watching the second half of the last season.
I just don't care
>>69369501
Yeah, he thought he was letting him keep his dignity, but he probably didn't realize how deep in trouble Lane was. Even if he did, it might have been too late.
If Lane had brought this up with the partners earlier, instead of dropping constant hints about Christmas bonuses, they probably would have helped him out. Don paid off Pete's share (granted it's because Pete took the heat for dropping that huge account to protect Don), but Don was never stingy with money throughout the series. Lane got walked on from the moment he entered the company, and was too proud to beg.
This scene is still a gut punch, because his fate seems inevitable.

>>69369260
>tried to kill himself but the car wouldn't start so he hung himself in the place that caused him the most pain

They went with the "lmao car won't start when I try to kill myself" trope and instantly reversed it into a much more impactful death. Intentionally shit on stupid tropes and reversed it for maximum impact.
>>69368005

>>69369260
>Also don never said anything about firing him, I don't remember it ever coming up again
Don specifically told him to resign to give him a good way out like a bro. He did everything he could for him.
I just rewatched it and its clearly "you need to be fired for this, but I'm giving you a nice way out. Get out."
>>69367221
This made me smile like a little fucker.
>>69369722
Even then, it wasn't really a trope. Jaguars were notorious for being pieces of shit performance-wise, and they alluded to that a few times throughout the series.
What was once a symbol of joy for Lane, ended up being just another failure in his life. His professional status and the car/brand he worked so hard to represent were both hollow behind the facade.
Someone better with words could put that in a more elegant way, but even the "trope" made an astounding amount of sense, and was draped in symbolism.
Too soon for a complete re-watch? I'm almost don e with House and need either a new series or a good one to re-watch. I'm thinking either Mad Men or Sopranos.

there's nothing of value in this show at all, not stakes are raised in it and nothing of interest happens, which is sad, because AMC gave us breaking bad which, along with GoT is one of the best shows ever

He might have had a point (I don't think so), but he was just mad that he can't pull off the shit Don can.

Don was absolutely talented in his field, but it's easier to exude confidence and charisma when you look like him. They both have valid points.

In canon, was this supposed to be Bert's ghost, or Don's hallucination? The time Bert appeared in the car is easy to chalk up to Don's exhaustion, but I don't know about this.
The Sopranos also dealt with the supernatural at times, and Chase and Weiner both say they were greatly influenced by Twin Peaks, so I wouldn't put supernatural weirdness out of the question.
>>69375320
hallucination, same as with anna draper
>>69375320
Neither, I figure
It's just a visual representation of the loss Don is feeling
This show is like coffee; go get another cup.

YEs, my idea good idea was to stop watching this pleb show, appealing to the middle class only because these people have never seen a tailored suit before.

Perfect whore, yes.
This show really makes me want to settle down with a sophisticated jewess

You read this entire thread about a show you think is for plebs, just so you can shitpost?
I feel bad for you
>>69375978
I was so upset when this series ended.
I felt like a kid again, crying when a good movie was over, or finishing a good book, but never wanting it to end.
It's nice to be in this thread and see all of you appreciating this series, anons.
