This might be autistic surface nitpicking, but it's kind of hard to have "religious mania is tearing this family apart" be your plot when the source of the hysteria actually exists. Like, you can't do the classic "oh, look at how cray-cray these puritan nutters are what with their witch hunts" when there are LITERALLY actual witches going about smashing up babies or whatever the fuck.
It just robs the movie of any meaning because it's neither a good monster movie (because it spends too much time on the family's contrived drama), or a good movie about the socio-cultural underpinning of the time in relation to religion and its role in mass hysteria (because the hysteria is 100% justified). So it just ends up being an admittedly nice-looking and well-put together nothing of a movie.
