Think about it though. If Robert survived his injuries, there is zero reason to believe he wouldn't show up later. Where would he have gone? He faked his death, and then ran off somewhere? Or, he was taken to some dungeon? Why not just kill him instead of keeping him locked up?
Robert's off-screen death can be assumed true, because there is Zero logical reason to explain why he would still be alive.
Meanwhile, it can be Assumed that anything happened to prevent Brienne from killing Stannis. In the books, Brienne is saved seconds away from death TWICE.The second time, she was literally hanged, before she said the word that saved her life.
If Stannis was still alive, then he could just as likely have gone into hiding. As that would be the smartest move, considering his depleted state.
