The main problem was actually the worldbuilding.
Rowling was writing by the seat of her ass for the first few, and that's why they had the more whimsical and fantasy-like air. Sure, there were problems and questions abound about how the wizarding world worked, but the tone made aided willing suspension of disbelief.
It's when she looked back and tried to patch over the holes where the problems began. When the narrative made it clear that it was trying to make a more cohesive world, the suspension faded because it was supposed to be no longer required.
I get that it was intended as a sign of harry growing older, focusing less on the fantastic and more on the world and how it worked, but the books suffered as a result.
