The movies shows their existing relationships to be hollow, with emotionally unavailable partners, and with zero potential of being salvageable. The wife is spiteful and passive aggressive. The phone calls show their relationship to be purely based on money and children. The photographer boyfriend is either out all the time or defending his actress friend, basically only returning to fuck.
It then goes on to show that the main characters aren't even great together. He sleeps with the lounge singer, and admits that his marriage once was based on something more. The characters end the movie anticlimactically without "sealing the deal." The whole movie is a pessimistic view on relationships.
But really, no, its 'cheating propaganda', and a 'cheater test'. Because your bf or gf never would have cheated if they never saw this movie.

I think the movie is really powerful if you've ever traveled abroad by yourself before.
I have done that.
Travelling is a lot of fun when you're with family or friends, but if you're by yourself, and it's a foreign country with a foreign culture, you start feeling lost and lonely quickly. For the American Bob Harris it's Japan. For me (a European) it was the United States.
The friendship that Bob and Charlotte develop is based on trying to escape that loneliness and trying to feel like you belong here. The issue is that those feelings can quickly escalate and you think you're in love. In reality, the two have nothing in common, they're just lonely and lost in life.
They don't actually kiss or fuck throughout the movie which is good. They did kiss at the end, but it's followed by words by Bob that the viewer can't understand, so it's up to us to fill in the blank. Of course it doesn't justify the kiss no matter what he said, unless it's literally "I just broke up with my wife so it's okay to kiss you, see you later at the hotel". But hey, maybe he did say that.

Nah, it wasn't that bad because they didn't show any intimacy between the two. They didn't even have a conversation. The singer sat next to him at the bar and the next scene is him waking up and the singer is in the shower. It was all about implications. It was meaningless.
