Think about all of the problems caused in the show by leaders putting their own happiness ahead of that of their subjects. The Red God had come through in the past, and Stannis needed to rally Westeros as soon as possible in order to prevent further loss of life. Stannis objectively made the right decision. We can't judge him using contemporary standards because magic isn't real.
Only women and numales fail to recognize that Stannis' actions, rather than condemn him, prove that he was the only one qualified to be king.
