What the fuck happened during this scene?

Reptile fused with some random statue and became human? Was the statue some kind of petrified dead soldier? Even if it was, why the fuck did falling inside of it give Reptile a human form?

Here's a fun fact: The reason the Reptile/Liu Kang and Johnny Cage/Scorpion fights are the two best fights the movie is due to them being choreographed by Liu Kang's actor, who also partially choreographed his fights with Shang and Sub-Zero.

Liu's Actor (Robin Shou) also helped conceptualize and design Scorpion's Lair, basing it on tibetan burial tombs.

To reference,

>It was designed after Tibetan burial tombs, by Shou, who gave the advice, where the bodies of family members were buried closer to the ceiling to help souls ascend to heaven, as the closer you are to the ceiling the closer to Heaven you are, so they used bamboo and wrapped mummies. All the bones and bodies represented Scorpion's past opponents. Mick Strawn, Visual Consultant contributed to this description. "Like nothing ever seen before in a movie" Ashby said.

Some other fun facts,

>Goro is credited as playing himself in the credits. (pic related)

>The shoot in Thailand was rough. They had to transport about 100 people and tons of equipment to Thailand in late October. Kasanoff joked that the Thai government refused a Visa to Goro due to the destruction he caused them centuries ago, filmmakers insisted they let him come and the Thai government called them fools and that'd they'll learn enough about the danger Goro presents.

>Throughout Behind the Dragon and some of the behind the scenes book by Prima, Kasanoff continuously made this into a joke and treated Goro like he was real. Kasanoff was horrified to recall his negotiations with Goro - he was threatened with death several times. Because of how badly he needed Goro, he yielded to enough of his demands without spending beyond his means and wasn't easy. Kasanoff said the brutal negotiation was the most diffiuclt in his career - money wasn't Goro's primary objective, they had to provide him unlimited food, and the food people were the ones who had it tough, pausing and said he doesn't even want to tell us what happened with the food people. He was even credited as himself in the credits under his effects section, likely to continue this running joke.

"Heightening the tension on the sets was the presence of the four-armed warrior of the shokan, Goro, who portrays himself in the film."

>Christopher Lambert contributed significantly to the film, both in terms of production and finances. The budget was very tight and stretched so thin by the shoot that the production couldn't afford to fly Lambert to Thailand and provide room and board, thus Lambert's shooting was to be done in an LA studio after principal photography, with Raiden only to appear in the opening of the film. Lambert however offered to pay for his own entire trip if it meant the producers could add more Raiden scenes as they had intended.

>On top of this, the budget was so maxed by the end of the shoot that the producers couldn't afford a wrap party. Christopher Lambert paid for an extravagant wrap party for the cast and crew out of his own pocket.

He also may or may not have banged Kitana (Talisa Soto)

>While Goddard's official biography listed his place of birth as Perth, Australia, and the year as either 1966 or 1965, his parents, Eric and Clara Goddard, of Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, in July of 2003 came forward to state that Trevor was in fact born in Sussex, England, his date of birth was in 1962, and that Trevor's claims to being a reformed criminal from Australia were in a fact a fabrication. He was able to fool many into believing his London accent was an Australian one, and edged out many authentic Australian actors for roles.

>His portrayal of the 'Kano' character in the Mortal Kombat movie directly influenced the evolution of the character in later Mortal Kombat video games. For example, in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the character of Kano had a characteristically Australian accent and personality, as exemplified in the Mortal Kombat 1995 film.

And then Sin City, 300 and Deadpool proved it again.

Make your game/comic characters look like the source material
Have your game/comic characters act like in the source material
Make your game/comic movie's atmosphere like the source material

Why does Hollywood not understand this? If you "adapt" a property just to change everything for the sake of making it "realistic", you should probably stick to biopics or somesuch.

Have some trivia

>During the fight with the human Reptile, the interior was shot in a stage in Van Nuys, California. Robin did all of his stunts here and choreographed this fight as well. Stairs actually bent Liu landed and Robin got banged up in theis fight.

>A wire was used in the shot for Reptile being 720-flipped by Liu's neck grab, but the neck grab was real.

>The window is identical to MKII's The Tower stage, although there is no official name for this location (this site calls it "Reptile's Lair") as it was not fought in the Black Tower but in a building of the wastelands of Outworld. (pic related)

>For Liu's finishing move against Reptile, the producers originally wanted the bugs, maggots, worms to pour using honey so they'd pour out but the Humane Society said no. Both producers joked about this - no one was there to see if the martial artists were alright despite they had an injury but the day they had bugs then they cared. Larry also joked Alison would be mad at him for saying that.

Some trivia:

Originally, Johnny was going to join Liu (as he was with Liu when Reptile attacked) and Kitana would appear and stop him, saying something along the lines that he must face this enemy alone.

Liu wins the fight and Kitana is there, saying, "Well done!" as in the film.

I guess it was cut due to either timing or they wanted to keep up the pace of the fight.

>`Mortal Kombat'' the movie has everything a teenage boy could want: snakes that jut out of a villain's palms, acrobatic kung- fu fighting and a couple of battling babes.

>Everything, that is, but an interesting plot, decent dialogue and compelling acting.

>Fans of the best-selling video games, which have sold more than 10 million copies, will love the comic-booky movie for staying true to the stories that serve as excuses for a series of gut-ripping duels between otherworldly fighters with special powers to torch, freeze and pummel their oppo nents, even if the decapitation rate for the film is significantly less than the game's.

>The plot, which combines stories from both ``Mortal Kombat'' games, centers on Shang Tsung, an evil sorcerer played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, best-known for his role in ``Rising Sun.'' Shang Tsung for nine generations has led a powerful prince to victory against his mortal enemies. Should he win the 10th ``Mortal Kombat'' tournament, the desolation and evil that have flourished in the grim, skeleton-riddled outworld will reign on Earth forever.

>Opposing the evil Shang Tsung is Rayden, played by Christopher Lambert, of the ``Highlander'' series. Sporting shoulder-length white hair and robes, Lambert looks like a cross between a white- bread Jesus and Steve Martin on a bad-hair day.
>>
>>69115516

>RAINDROPS

http://youtu.be/5VjdE9Y8VQA
>>
>>69116244

>LAMBERT LISPS

>An unconvincing god, Lambert lisps through this morality tale. His challenge is to get three human warriors to gain the power they need to win the decisive 10th tournament by plumbing the depths of their souls. They don't have to plumb very deep.

>Linden Ashby plays a one-dimensional playboy warrior well- known to gamers as ``Johnny Cage,'' with a woodenness second only to that of Lambert. The hard- boiled kung-fu babe ``Sonya Blade'' is portrayed by Bridgette Wilson with such seriousness that she becomes laughable.

>Most convincing is Robin Shou, an up-and-coming action film star, who plays Liu Kang, a kung-fu artist who left China for better opportunities in America. He carries a burden of guilt for leaving behind a younger brother who has since died at the hands of Shang Tsung.

>Since the movie keeps dialogue to a minimum in an effort to appeal to a global audience, Shou has little to say. But with his intense presence and graceful kung-fu flips and kicks, he could give Bruce Lee a run for his money in screen appeal.

>SMOLDERING INTENSITY

>Helping out the trio is Princess Kitana, who has her own reasons for wanting to vanquish Shang Tsung. Former model Talisa Soto brings to her Princess role a smoldering intensity, but it falls short of Shou's. She looks nice in a black leather bustier, though.

>Aside from the glittery special effects and sweeping panoramas of Buddhist monks lined up before exotic temples, the movie is saved by a touch of wacky humor. Early on, Rayden tells the warriors that he's looked into their souls, that one of them will decide the tournament and that the fate of the world depends on them.

>``Heh, heh, heh,'' he says in an evil snicker akin to Beavis and Butt-head's. Then he abruptly utters, ``Sorry.''

>Such campy moments could turn ``Mortal Kombat'' into a cult classic with a following of 13-year- old boys in baseball caps and hoods who hoot out the dialogue as it occurs.

>Live-action sets of the ship's hold was designed to allow easibility in preparing for effects shots as it is the site of many elaborate stunts that require special effects, such as wires where people would be pulled and thrown around. The walls had to be re-enforced to support this and those portions of the ship were built. When Sub-Zero is thrown across the ceiling, the ceiling was digitalized to hide the stunt apparatus throwing him, hanging by wires. This is safest and easiest to do in a built set, where it is a controlled environment. It was filmed on a soundtage in L.A. Larry added they rented 3 airport hangars from 3 large L.A. airports, implying this was inside the airport hangar.

>In the photos above, the screenwriter, Kevin Droney, appears in the white shirt beside Scorpion.

>Scorpion's effect was difficult because of his ropedart effect. The filmmakers considered creating a prosthetic hand for the emerging shots and put an actor in a Scorpion suit and fly him around on wires, but a prosthetic hand is too limiting and it would be hard to hide the actual arm in wider shots and to remove the wires. Having a real version of Scorpion would lock the specific look and movement form - which is not as exciting or dynamic as what you could achieve in the computer. A computer created Scorpion would have no limits on motion or style. The filmmakers settled for digitalizing the creature, as with digitalized effects the possibilities are endless. The creature was made from a plastic model and put into the computer. They wanted it to be a "creature with an attitude," and have personality. The effect was created for its awesomeness, to contribute to the story, and to enhance what we know about MK.

Scorpion's actor, Chris Casamassa, is a pretty neat dude.

Sub-Zero was played by François Petit (pic related), a world class martial artist who holds the title of KaiDen-Shihan, which is the highest title of Master in Jujitsu in the world. He also holds a 7th degree black belt in Ninjitsu, a 7th degree black belt in Karate Do, and a 3rd degree Black Belt in Judo.

So he claims.

>He has not gained these titles in Japan, nor has he officially won any world titles.

So he might be a faker.

>Fine, Scorpion fatality.

>Scorpion's fatality is a mix of puppetry and effects. The idea was to have Scorpion's blood be lava since he breathed fire. Alison thought the flying hand was funny but Larry noted they couldn't believe they got away with it (since it's violent and such violence was usually seen in an R-rated film). The Friendship was made for fun but they decided to keep it in since it matches his "cocky" trait.

>We started out in Santa Monica Airport, where we shot a lot. We had big sets. There's a bar down there on the south side of the field, and we used to go there Friday when we'd wrap. Oh my God. Just crazy stuff. There was a medic who was a funny guy, quirky. He was very into security on the set. He should have been a security guy instead of a medic. Tom Cruise had a hangar nearby and came over and was like, "Hey what are you guys shooting? Can I check it out?" And the medic goes, "You're not in this movie. Go away!" And Tom Cruise goes, "I just want to see," and he goes, "I don't care who you are, get out of here!"

>Shou: For my fight with Reptile, it needed to be a little bit more kinetic. I did everything in that scene. In one of the stunts, Reptile threw me and I hit this pillar and I actually fractured two ribs on that, because I didn't expect I'd hit the edge of the pillar. That was also my 10th take, so I was a little tired. But I didn't tell anyone. What's the point? If I told them I fractured the ribs, they're going to stop production and then there goes my Hollywood dream. I was hurting. I was taking a lot of Advil and then I continued the rest of the fight with two fractured ribs. I told Keith Cooke, who plays Reptile, "I'm hurt on the right side of my ribs so don't kick me there." I muscled through the fight and then went to the hospital.

>Anderson: After Mortal Kombat, I wanted to try something different. [New Line President] Mike [De Luca] asked me whether I'd be interested in coming back [for 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation]. I ended up doing something very different. I did Event Horizon next, which was super dark and couldn't be more different from Mortal Kombat. I stretched my wings afterward. Looking back on it, I went, "Ah, maybe I should have done it." It's one of the reasons why on a go-forward basis, when I became involved with Resident Evil, I felt if I'm going to do another one of these adaptations, this time I'm going to stay with it. I'm going to really stay with the franchise and shepherd it. Ironically, me not doing Mortal Kombat II is kind of the reason I've ended up doing Resident Evil one, two, three, four, five, six …

Well

At least he regrets not doing the second one

Lack of decent roles to propel him into more mainstream shit, I mean Jackie Chan started on the outside and came in five years later..

>With Christopher, we did a creative deal so he only worked for like four or five weeks, for x amount of dollars. He was expensive, and he wasn't going to be able to come to Thailand because he would be going way over what we'd paid him. So I developed this plan where we were going to do close-ups of Chris in L.A. and then wide shots of a double in Thailand, and then edit it together creatively. Christopher, when he found out, said, "Forget about that. I'm coming to Thailand." He sensed this was going to make it a better movie if he could be there in those landscapes. And it is. I'm sure his agents and manager and lawyer were furious with him, because he basically came to Thailand for free. When he was there, he paid for the wrap party as well.
