The diversity in the new one is down to two reasons.
Diversity for diversitys sake and for the fact that they dont have to put as much work into making every character having a stand out personality since you can rely on people knowing them by what ethnicity they are.
That said, the original was pretty diverse, but then it was down to nationalities rather than race.
