I wouldnt be surprised if HD DVD = lasy disc and Blu Ray = VHS

I.e. HD DVD had superior quality which was too hard to transfer onto a disc and Blu Ray was cheaper and easier so the companies decided to use that.

I'm so glad I skipped disc media. VHS to HDD/USB/torrent was the way to go.

HD DVD's picture quality was actually a bit higher than Blu-ray

With HD DVD copy protection was optional which is why Porn companies chose HD DVD since it's cheaper to realese thier fims without copy protection just like they did with VHS and DVD.

Blu ray forces studios to use copy protection which makes it more expensive for smaller studios / distributors to get their content out
Blu-ray won the battle because Disney backed blu-ray.

Moral of the story...

For me Blu-ray won the format war on January 4, 2008 when it was announced Sony paid Warner Bros a shitload of money to exclusively release their movies on Blu-ray (this was already being done by sony and toshiba but warner bros was the last big one to go exclusive). I bought a dedicated player and the Xbox 360 addon.

A keynote by Toshiba on the HD DVD format that was due to take place the next day at CES was cancelled hours after this announcement took place while they got their shit together in the bunker and realised it was the end

I chose HD DVD as my format so was very interested in how the war went on, HD DVD was objectively a superior format. The movies loaded up faster, they didn't stutter and crash unlike blu-ray at the same time. Its worth mentioning at this time that the blu-ray spec was incomplete at this stage. You can buy blu-rays now that wont place correctly on first gen players. It took at least another year for them to get their shit together. It wasn't all software, some of the first gen players simply lack the hardware to play these properly. Also them being region free was nice. Also HD DVD had discs that played in DVD players when flipped over

At first the first porn studios went with HD DVD, HD DVD fans that because they chose VHS this would be a good indicator. Blu-ray fanboys (and I agree with them) said that this was outdated as a measure for success because even in 2008 everyone got their porn from the net so no one gives a shit. In the end I think they made little reasons.

+Sony putting blu ray players in PS3 was GOAT strategy, even selling them at a loss. This made the PS3 one of the cheapest blu-ray players out there.
-I wonder what would have happened if MS put the drive in their 360s and didnt half ass it with an addon
-Toshiba weren't nearly as aggressive as Sony, Sony paid a lot of money to many studios to get their movies whilst Toshiba sat around resting on their laurels and slight head start.
-HD DVD had less capacity

just an info dump, bluray is superior in 25gb per layer apposed to 15gb

you also have the tech scaling to 4 layers, and apparently through some shit i don't quite understand, 4 layers is 128gb
>>
>>69042457
you didnt need to go to dvd the moment it got popular,
you then could watch most movies in therters or on tv, and at this point tivo was a thing, you could easily have skipped dvd

personally i still use dvd and bluray as data backups, i have never had a thumb drive that did not corrupt, and i have dvds from almost 15 years ago that still read, and if one disc fails, im out 4-25gb of data, appose to hundreds of gb or tb of data.

bluray was in ps3, hd dvd was an add on for xbox
for a long time the ps3 was the cheapest bluray player, and for longer the best.

kind of like with dvd, ps2 was the best and cheapest, and how widely it sold, it cemented it as a format faster then it normally would have.
>>
>>69049269

not boring, just a mouthful, bluray is 2 syllables while hd dvd has to be spelled out every time.

kind of like how firewire has another name, but no one knows it due to it being a mouth full, hell everyone knows wifi, but how many know 802.11b

there are a few others but i can't remember them off the top of my head.

There was a point in the "chasing amy" commentary where Kevin Smith went on a rant about how laser disc was so much better than DVD and how "DVD sucks". Originally recorded for the laser disc release, he actually had to put a note when they released it on DVD about how he didn't really mean it and DVD is actually a good format.
