Nope, that's just incorrect. Tokyo Story is in my top 10 though. I do actually like Late Spring and Autumn Afternoon almost as much as Tokyo Story.

And nah, Vertigo is way, way, way better than North By Northwest. Rear Window and Notorious are tied for Hitchcock's second best.

>>
>>69035824
I remember walking around Vienna and thinking of that film. The backstreets, and the river bank.

good times. I travelled Europe a lot, but never really had a connection like those two did. I met girls, but never felt as strongly as they did about each other.
>>
>>69035946
Right, it's also frustrating how people like Allen feel they have license to cover the poor and disparaged while they're busy crying about their "sophisticated" intellectualized lives.
They just push shallow consumerism onto the masses as most of the claim to be disgusted by it.

I can still enjoy his movies though, I hope.
Anyone seen pic related?
>>
>>69036073
why do people paint the trilogy as a sad one? it's realistic, and shows true love. they had kids together, moved across the world to be with each other, and at the end of midnight they showed that they could still have the same feelings towards each other as they did when they were 23 years old.

>>
>>69036235
wtf, did you even read my entire post? it wasnt depressing to see that two people can still love each other after so much time together
>>
>>69031138

I think this trilogy has forever ruined romantic films for me.
>>
>>69036133

that's not at all my interpretation of the movies. Before Midnight is a movie I can hardly sit through because of the bitterness and anger that lies underneath the surface of so many of their interactions. It is so deeply painful to watch these two who used to be so idealistic and romantic and see where that ends up. They have a well of bitterness and mistrust built up that is separating them in nearly every scene. The moment when they go to the hotel and the wine bottle is sitting in their room is one of the saddest moments in the whole trilogy as it calls back the moment in Sunrise, the ridiculously romantic gesture that Jesse made when he convinces that wine bottle out of the guy at the bar. Now however they just walk in to a hotel room and find a bottle waiting for them, all the spontaneity and romance of their relationship has disappeared and been replaced by resentment. I mean the movie climaxes with a sequence in which Jesse admits that he's cheated on Celine. Their feelings are not the same as they were in Sunrise. They're still there of course but the romantic glow that is so exciting about youth has completely disappeared. It's a very hard thing to watch.

>>
>>69036211

Sunset > Midnight > Sunrise
>>
>>69036133
Taken as a trilogy it's not so sad, but watching the first two definitely is

Also I still found the third one fairly sad, realistic, but sad, because of the rock and a hard place Jesse was put in

the sadness of it comes from its realism

I would make a distinction between romantic movies, and movies about love.
These are the latter

2. Blue Valentine, has probably been mentioned a few times already but still great film, some "romantic" elements but isn't a romantic movie

It doesn't matter. No matter how many girls or boys you date, you'll never be able to attain the level of pure bliss contained in Before Sunrise. That kind of romance seems so realistic but in actuality is even harder to obtain than what generic rom com's serve us. It's so sad. The scene in Sunset where they compare their later lovers feels like a fourth wall breaking jab at viewers. I'll never get that kind of experience. All I do now is sleep with randoms, giving up on the hope of ever getting that wonderful day together with the perfect girl. It's just not happening. I'll hold your revolver if you hold mine. And we'll count to three.
>>
>>
>>69037507
