Probably about the same as Arnie or Clint Eastwood, have had. Sure they've had hiccups where their conservative views have come under fire by the liberal media, but like them Wayne was still a pretty likeable and charismatic guy when it mattered. Being openly gay is really, really bad for your career - especially if you're a leading man. Like you can be a homosexual and have sex with guys, but if you're in Hollywood and you're openly gay with a partner you're basically cut off from any leading man role.
John Ford would slap him around and make him cry on set, so if he was alive now he'd be more open about his true sensitive side instead of trying hard to be tough and manly because directors don't push you as hard anymore.
