Come on m8.
>>
>>68983390
How is are Brazil or 12 Monkeys underrated?
>>
>>68983421
In the mainstream consciousness they both have pretty much been forgotten. Science fiction fans all love Brazil, probably more than it deserves, but 12 Monkeys is Brad Pitt's best performance.
That list is more of a gateway list, assuming OP isn't very deep into scifi to begin with.
>>
>>68983610
Brazil is also Doug walker's favorite movie.

>>68983703
Brazil and Blade Runner are probably the two most common favorite science fiction movie among casual sci-fi fans

>>
>>68983703
I have friends that absolutely love Brazil. I have tortured myself 3 times watching it through, but in the end, it fails miserably for me. 12 Monkeys is another film that falls far short. To each his own.
>>
>>68983895

>>
>>68983390
Soylent Green is one of my favorites. The scene with the great Edward G. Robinson at the end always gets me. The color shock really does put you in there with him.
>>
>>68973524
>>68977116
The film is completely inconsistent with Vincent's heart condition. He goes near panic mode when he's on that treadmill, but, then, he beats his brother, who should be far more physically superior to him, and not having a potential heart condition, in a swimming race. Swimming is an exercise activity far more strenuous and dangerous for Vincent, yet, somehow, he still manages to beat his brother, and doesn't suffer from the problems like he did on the treadmill of light jogging.

His (enhanced) brother even states that their parents thought Vincent died in his twenties, suggesting that if the defect did exist, it would prevent him from doing all the physical activity he needed to engage in to pass as a borrowed ladder. The writers screwed up on this part, but it only makes sense if Vincent never had a heart condition, at least for now, because he pulls off feats that shouldn't be possible otherwise.

SPACE OPERA!
>>
>>68979250
Vincent was conceived naturally; even if his parents desired a designed child, such as his brother, the method used to create such a child would not help Vincent, who was born without such optimal conditions. Vincent represents the failed profiles screened out in the process of selecting a genetic profile that would create a designed child of Gattaca. Vince represents people who weren’t able to access the professionals and technology required to make PGD possible, or people like us, born too early to take advantage of it.

The world of Gattaca is not flawed because it creates a society of people with perfect health, it is flawed because it discriminates against those who unable to meet the criteria, and their lives are hampered as a consequence. The society of Gattaca is so reliant on PGD it has resulted in a future where medical technology has stagnated. Evidence of this is shown in the film: Vincent and Anton’s parents both died young, with their offspring only in their late 20s-early 30s at the time.

There are no gene therapies, personalized drugs, stem cell treatments or even laser eye surgeries, available for people like Vincent that can treat his medical conditions and help him compete with the designed humans. These are medical technologies aiding people at this moment; a future where medical technology only assists those born fortunate is a terrible era to live in. Deliberately neglecting the people who suffer most is an indication of its morality.

Not sure if they're considered underrated but recent sci-fi movies that don't get mentioned nearly enough include:

Another Earth
Melancholia
Love (2011)
Last Night (1998)

They're more character oriented fantasy/sci-fi, meaning there's not a lot of action, but I love them all. Love is one of my all time favorites.
