Is this Scorsese's most underrated movie?
>>
>>68943356

Nope. It's one of his most overrated.

The underrated honour goes to After Hours of course.
>>
>>68943375
How is it overrated? Who even rates it? Siskel hated it.
>>
>>68943375
I like you anon, that or Bring Out The Dead
>>
>>68943409

People like you. Also I've seen it appear on several lists of the best movies from the 90s. There is a bizarre trend of people trying to pretend it's as good as or possibly even better than Goodfellas.

It's a completely overblown mess of a movie.

>>68943419

Good call my man, that'd probably be my 2nd choice after AH. Assuming that we all agree King of Comedy is considered one of Scorsese's best and is thus not eligible for the underrated category.
>>
>>68943356
>underrated
How exactly Casino would be underrated?
New York or Bringing out the Dead are underrated, not Casino one of his most heralded works.
>>
>>68943356
>underrated
since when
>>
>>68943356
That would probably be The King Of Comedy. A 10/10 movie that most people don't pay attention to. One of Scorsese's best works and DeNiro's best performances.
>>
>>68943562

I think King of Comedy has developed a pretty strong reputation over the years. It's generally regarded as one of his best.
>>
too bad King of Comedy isn't accessible to a pleb like me.
>>
>>68943562
You spelled After Hours wrong, friend
>>
>>68943562
De niro was awesome in this one. He nailed it as a total lunatic looser
>>

didnt he already nail that though anon

>already nail that

No, you're thinking of your mother.

but the character in Taxi Driver is not like the character in King of Comedy. just because they both have mental problems doesn't mean they're automatically the same.

that's a horribly reductive look at two characters.

one character is sickened by society and decides to murder a few people he think represent the scum of society. he's also quite possibly a racist.

the other is a bumbling shut-in who has deluded himself into believing he's a great comedian.

where are the similarities in these two characters beyond a reductive "they're both crazy, must be the same."
>>
>>68944088
but anon i didnt say theyre the same. i said similar.

I really don't get it. The film is like Goodfellas' retarded cousin, an already overrated film.

Please explain any praise for this film that shouldn't be going to Goodfellas instead.

It's better aesthetically than Goodfellas. Also, it takes itself more seriously. Other than that, they're pretty much the same.
>>
>>68944549
goodfellas is more serious than casino though
>>
>>68944418
Sharon Stone's performance as a goldigging cunt is great
>>
>>68943711
Well, hus character in king of comedy and travis have similarities. Rupert is a product of his era (like travis), but it's more about delusional ideas about fame, apreciation etc. moment when he imagines that he hosts a talk show with a picture of an audience on the wall and his mom starts asking who he talks to is pure gold. Sad and funny, good ol' comedy
>>
to the anon that said De Niro's character from TD is nothing like his from King of Comedy: you're wrong. they share some traits, it's not like they're dissimilar.
>>
>>68944549
>It's better aesthetically than Goodfellas
No. I mean it's arguable but Goodfellas was for more memorable.
>Also, it takes itself more seriously.
Casino felt more cartoonish and over-the-top. How is that more serious? If anything this is a point against it.
>>
>>68944654
Casino is a worse version of Goodfellas (mixed with Godfather Pt. II) imho.

Goodfellas = Better narrative

Casino = Better cinematography or whatever the fuck buzzword /tv/ uses now.

Casino is a much better film visually, but thats it. Goodfellas is a much more complete work

I'm not defending Casino, as I prefer Goodfellas over it. I'm just stating the differences I found while watching both. To me, Goodfellas felt more light hearted (if that's even posible, considering it's a violent mob film) and had some fun, tension breaking moments. Casino, in that sense, was more serious. As for the aesthetics, Casino had a better photography and overall cinematography than Goodfellas. The figurine, art, scenery all fell in place with the Las Vegas setting.
>>
>>68945508
>Goodfellas felt more light hearted

Are you sure? Goodfellas was actually pretty dark and brutal. It was also subtle in presenting its violence and gravity of situations.

Pesci's characters was a bit over-the-top as well in Casino. His presence was more comical than anything. In Goodfellas Tommy was scary as fuck. His introduction scene kept you on edge and you know for sure he's a psychopath. It's almost as if in Casino he was playing himself in Goodfellas.

Stuff like this can be found all over Casino and in the end it really ends up being the weaker movie and generally a weak movie since Goodfellas by the same director/cast had done "it" better already.
>>
>>68944247
Just suck his fucking cock already.

Also King of Comedy is far from his best.
>>
>>68945197
>cinematography
>buzzword
nigga you are straight up stupid
>>
It's just a remake of Goodfellas. It's like a parody of Scorsese featuring every cliche trope he overuses in his movies.
>>
>>68944549
>Other than that, they're pretty much the same.

One is a biblical epic, the other is a anthropological study.
>>
>>68943356
Come on now OP everyone fucking knows that movie and if anything it's too overrated just for being a spiritual sequel to Goodfellas.

What are Bring out the Dead, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear?
>>
>>68943356
It's ranked highly by everyone.
But it ranks below Goodfellas, usually, because it re-uses all its shooting style and narrative devices.
The actors are better in Casino, though, and that's saying something.
